Identify the issuer
HAI Korea, the Halal Advancement Institute of Korea, administers certification associated with the Korea Muslim Federation (KMF). Its certification page links information for checking certified businesses.
The Korea Halal Authority (KHA) is another certifier with its own mark. Use the issuer's contact information to verify a certificate when needed.
Other bodies may certify or advise businesses. Read the issuer's name rather than treating every sign containing the word “halal” as the same document.
Match the certificate to the purchase
Check the certificate number, registered business name, restaurant branch or product, scope and expiry date. If the trading name differs from the registered entity, ask the issuer or business to explain the connection.
A certificate for one ingredient does not automatically certify the full menu, kitchen or every branch. An expired document or an undated sticker is not current confirmation.
Distinguish tourism labels
The Korea Tourism Organization's Muslim-friendly listings use several categories. Read the category definition and the listing date:
| Label | What to check |
|---|---|
| Halal Certified | Check the named certifier and current certificate. |
| Self Certified | This reflects the Muslim owner or cook's claim; ask about the operation. |
| Muslim Friendly | Some halal options may be offered, and alcohol may be sold. Confirm the actual dish. |
| Pork Free | This addresses pork; it does not establish that the food is halal-certified or that alcohol is absent. |
A directory is useful for finding options, but it does not replace current confirmation of the kitchen or product you will use.
Ask specific questions
Ask about meat sourcing, stock, marinades, frying oil, utensils and alcohol where these matter to your requirements. A broad menu description may not answer how a particular dish is prepared.
Certification and allergen suitability are separate. A certified halal dish can still contain an ingredient to which you are allergic.
Check overseas recognition when relevant
Recognition can depend on the destination country, certifier, product category and date. If you need a product accepted under another country's system, check the receiving authority's current register rather than relying on an older announcement of an agreement.
For a disputed certificate or misleading claim, keep the document or advertisement and contact the named issuer. Do not assume that private certification means a misleading consumer claim has no possible remedy.
