Finding an accessible toilet

🚽Public Toilets in Korea: What Travelers Should Know — EpicKor - Explore Korea Handbook

Look for a specific facility

Railway stations, larger shopping centres, museums, airports and public buildings are useful starting points for accessible toilets. Availability and layout vary, so confirm the room you intend to use.

An accessibility symbol does not tell you the transfer side, door width, turning space or whether a companion can enter. Ask about the features that matter to you, especially before a long journey.

Check the route and opening hours

Confirm that the route to the toilet is step-free and that any necessary elevator is working. A suitable cubicle is not useful if it is reached only by stairs or a locked corridor.

Check the building's hours and whether the toilet requires a key or staff assistance. Small premises and older buildings can have limited facilities, but size alone does not establish what a particular business provides.

Find station toilets

KakaoMap is a Korean navigation app. Its station 교통약자정보, or accessibility information, can show toilet locations and other facilities. Station floor plans and staff can help confirm the current route.

Ask whether the accessible toilet is inside or outside the ticket gates. It may be in a different location from another toilet at the station.

Participating Seoul and metropolitan rail services offer a 15-minute re-entry concession under specified conditions, including the same station and line. It does not apply to every operator or ticket. Ask staff before leaving the paid area if you need help or cannot meet the time limit; do not rush an essential toilet visit to avoid a fare.

Confirm the room's features

If needed, ask for recent photographs or measurements of the door, space beside the toilet, grab rails and basin. Check whether the door can be closed with your chair inside and whether controls are reachable.

A toilet described as accessible may not include an adult changing bench or hoist. Ask for those specifically rather than assuming a baby-changing table provides equivalent support.

Use the emergency call facility if you need urgent assistance, and tell staff if equipment is broken or access is obstructed.

Keep a nearby alternative

The Korea Tourism Organization's accessible-travel database and local facility information can help identify options. Confirm details with the venue when a particular feature is essential.

Save the address and opening hours of a second option. Temporary closures, cleaning or equipment failures can affect even a well-documented facility.
