Know what a VPN does
A VPN, or virtual private network, creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN endpoint, such as a workplace network or a provider's server. It does not make every website safe, guarantee anonymity or remove account requirements.
VPN services are used for ordinary purposes such as remote work. Follow your employer's requirements if you need access to a work system, and test that access before travelling.
Distinguish blocking from other access problems
Korea restricts access to some online content under its laws. A blocked address may show an official warning page, but not every restriction appears in the same way.
An unavailable page can also result from a temporary outage, a service's regional policy, an expired login or a security check. Read the message and use the service's official support instead of assuming every failure is a nationwide block.
Do not enter personal details or install software from an unexpected warning page. Check the address carefully, as fraudulent pages can imitate official notices.
Prepare streaming and account access
Streaming catalogues vary by region, and downloaded programmes may have expiry dates or travel restrictions. Check the provider's terms and test permitted downloads before departure.
For banking and other important accounts, keep a working verification method. Follow the bank's travel-notification process if it has one, and save the official support contact.
Where supported, set up an authenticator or backup codes before travelling and store recovery information securely. Do not remove a working method until the replacement has been tested.
Check map features directly
Mapping services can differ in route coverage and detail. Test the walking, driving or transit route you need in the current app rather than relying on an old claim that every feature works or none does.
Naver Map and KakaoMap are Korean navigation apps that can provide useful alternatives. A VPN does not supply a map provider with missing data or establish that a newly approved feature has actually launched.
Keep an offline fallback
Save important addresses, booking references and contact details so they remain available when an app or connection fails. A working internet connection alone does not guarantee that a booking, banking or identity service will accept your account.
