Use it when your contacts do
KakaoTalk is a messaging app widely used in Korea. Accommodation hosts, guides and businesses may use it for conversations or updates, but each business chooses its own contact methods.
Ask where a booking confirmation or change will arrive. If you do not use KakaoTalk, ask whether email, SMS or another supported channel is available.
Register before you need it
Install the official app, choose a language and register using a supported phone number. Follow the verification steps and allow time for additional security checks.
Keep access to the number associated with the account. Removing or disabling that line may prevent you from receiving later codes. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you may be able to retain the home line while using travel data; check roaming charges and settings.
Do not share verification codes or let another person register an account in your name.
Understand business notifications
Businesses can use Alimtalk (알림톡), Kakao's informational notification service, for messages such as order confirmations or delivery updates. These messages can arrive even if you have not added the business's channel.
A KakaoTalk Channel is a business or organisation's account, which may provide information or chat support. Check that it is the correct channel before sending booking details or personal information.
An unexpected message should still be verified. A familiar logo or business name does not by itself establish that a link is safe.
Use calls, translation and location sharing
Voice and video calls work through an internet connection. The app may not charge a separate call fee, but Wi-Fi, mobile-data or roaming charges can still apply.
Translation features can help with short exchanges. Confirm important names, amounts and decisions rather than assuming the translated message is exact.
You can share a location or map pin when arranging a meeting. Check what is being shared and with whom, and use the address as well when it helps identify the entrance.
Treat identity and payment services separately
Messaging registration does not automatically qualify an account for Kakao Pay, a mobile payment service, or Kakao Certificate, an identity-certificate service. Those features have their own eligibility and verification requirements.
Kakao's Talk Safety Pass is one route for resolving certain account restrictions and has specific identity requirements. Many short-stay tourist mobile plans do not support the required Korean identity check.
Use the app's current help options if an account is restricted. Do not assume that opening a messaging account also completes registration for every other Kakao app.
