Start with the services you will use
Install a navigation app, a translation app and any taxi or booking services you expect to need. Open them before departure, choose the language you prefer and test account access.
You do not need every app on a long checklist. A few working services, with important details saved offline, are more useful than many untested accounts.
Navigation and translation
Naver Map and KakaoMap are Korean navigation apps that offer English interfaces. Check the route, destination entrance and current operating information for your journey.
Papago is a translation app from Naver, a Korean search and online-services company. It offers text, speech and image translation. Google Translate and supported phone translation features are other options.
Try the functions you need. If you download language packs, test each required offline feature with Wi-Fi and mobile data turned off; offline text support does not necessarily include camera or conversation mode.
Messaging and taxis
KakaoTalk is a messaging app used by many Korean people and businesses. Register with a supported number and allow time for verification. Keep that number accessible if the account may send further codes.
k.ride is Kakao Mobility's taxi app for visitors. Kakao T is its broader transport-booking app. Check the chosen app's account and payment options before you need a ride, and confirm the vehicle and pickup point when booking.
Reservations and delivery
CatchTable's international app provides restaurant reservations and waitlist services with visitor registration options. Check the restaurant's own availability, deposit and cancellation terms.
Other reservation and delivery apps have their own identity, phone-number, address and payment requirements. A working account on one service does not establish that another will accept the same details.
Use the official global or visitor version when it supports what you need. Check the publisher carefully before downloading.
Transit and optional services
Mobile Tmoney provides phone-based access to Tmoney, a rechargeable transit payment system. Compatibility and funding options depend on the device, operating system and product. Confirm the requirements before deciding to travel without a physical card.
A public Wi-Fi locator, attraction-ticket app or offline subway map may be useful for a particular trip. Test the features you intend to use and keep ticket or booking details accessible offline.
Protect account access
Some services send a simple SMS code; others require 본인인증, a subscriber-based Korean identity check. Many passport-issued tourist SIMs do not support the latter.
Keep access to your home number for existing account codes if needed, but check roaming charges and automatic data-switching settings. A compatible dual-SIM setup can help; it is not available on every phone.
Save important addresses and confirmations before travelling. Do not make the first attempt to register, add a payment card or change language when a time-sensitive journey is already starting.
