Find a verified public network
Korea's Public WiFi programme provides free wireless internet at participating public locations and on many city buses. Airports, accommodation and businesses may run separate networks.
Confirm the network name on official signage or with staff. A familiar-looking name alone does not prove that a hotspot belongs to the operator you expect.
Complete the connection page
For Public WiFi Free, select the network in your device's Wi-Fi settings. If a connection page does not appear automatically, open a browser and follow the operator's instructions. The button 공공와이파이 이용하기 means “Use public Wi-Fi”.
A device can show that it is connected to Wi-Fi before it has internet access. If the connection fails, retry the official connection steps or use another trusted network; do not install unfamiliar software or profiles offered by an unexpected page.
Use secure-network instructions carefully
The programme also offers Public WiFi Secure, which encrypts the wireless connection. Its published username and password are both wifi. Setup varies by operating system, so follow the official secure-network guide, including any certificate requirements.
Seoul's municipal SEOUL_Secure network uses Seoul for both the username and password. Confirm the city's current instructions rather than accepting an unfamiliar certificate solely because the network name looks right.
Wireless encryption does not prevent every form of fraud or protect information you submit to a deceptive website.
Expect gaps in coverage
Public hotspots serve particular locations and vehicles. They do not provide a continuous connection along every street, and a listed hotspot may be temporarily unavailable or busy.
Carrier-branded hotspots may require an eligible subscription or another access arrangement. Check your plan rather than assuming any Korean SIM grants access. For a café or hotel network, ask staff for the correct name and password.
Keep important information available offline
Save your accommodation address, booking references and essential contact details before leaving a reliable connection. Mobile data or roaming can be useful when you need a taxi, navigation or an account code away from a hotspot.
Avoid sensitive transactions on an untrusted network. Keep software updated, use official apps or verified websites and do not ignore security warnings simply to get online.
