The three options, in one paragraph each
eSIM is a digital SIM profile you install on your own phone before departure (or on arrival, over airport wifi) — no physical swap, and, on a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home line can stay enabled for calls or texts subject to its roaming terms. It runs on SK Telecom (SKT), KT, or LG U+ infrastructure depending on the reseller. Compare the number of plans you need and whether the product allows hotspot sharing.
Pocket wifi ("wifi egg") is a rented pebble-sized router you pick up and return at the airport. It creates a Wi-Fi network for nearby devices; the device limit depends on the rental. It needs charging and must remain near the people using it. Check return deadlines and any late or non-return charges.
Roaming means paying your home carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, EE, etc.) to use its partner networks in Korea, billed to your existing account. Check whether your existing plan already includes Korea roaming. A paid day pass can be convenient, but compare the whole-trip cost and data allowance.
Choose for your device and travel pattern
| Situation | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Travelling independently | An eSIM or physical SIM gives each person their own connection. |
| Group staying together | Compare a shared router’s total rental against individual plans; check its device limit. |
| Existing roaming included | Check the allowance and speed before buying another service. |
| Carrier-locked phone | Compare roaming with pocket Wi-Fi. The carrier lock may also block another carrier’s physical SIM. |
| Unlocked phone without eSIM | Compare a compatible physical SIM with pocket Wi-Fi. |
| Need local calls or texts | Choose a plan that explicitly includes a Korean number and the required voice/SMS service. |

Physical SIM and pocket wifi
Get a dated quote from the carrier or reseller for your travel dates, including pickup and return charges. The Trazy SKT router listing offers airport pickup at Incheon, Gimpo and Gimhae. It requires an eligible Visa/Mastercard for a security hold and states a ₩100,000 non-return charge. Check the assigned counter’s hours; rental price and equipment limits are specific to the booking.
Home-carrier roaming (US carriers, official pages)
| Carrier | Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile | International Pass, 1-day | $10/day | The pass includes 2 GB of high-speed data and unlimited calling in its covered destinations. |
| T-Mobile | International Pass, 10-day | $50 ($5/day) | The pass includes 15 GB of high-speed data and unlimited calling. |
| T-Mobile | International Pass, 30-day | $75 ($2.50/day) | The pass includes 30 GB of high-speed data and unlimited calling. |
| AT&T | International Day Pass | $12/day | The pass provides calls, texts and data under your domestic plan’s terms for 24 hours. Eligible additional lines on the same account cost $6 per day when used on the same day. |
| Verizon | TravelPass | $12/day | The pass includes unlimited calls and texts, plus 5 GB of high-speed data. Data then slows to 3G speeds for the rest of the session. |
Verizon and AT&T use 24-hour sessions triggered by qualifying use, not a reset at midnight in Korea. Background data can start a session. Check your account for included roaming and current eligibility before enabling it.
Before you pay
- Check the exact phone model and unlock status. Regional variants can differ even when they share a model name.
- Read “unlimited” carefully. Find the daily high-speed allowance, reduced speed and hotspot limit.
- Check when validity begins. Installing an eSIM and starting its service period are not always the same event; follow the seller’s instructions.
- Decide whether you need a number. Data-only plans cannot receive carrier SMS. The international CatchTable app, a restaurant booking and waitlist service, explicitly does not require a Korean number, so check the actual services you plan to use.
- Keep your home line under control. Set the intended data line and check automatic data switching and roaming charges.
- For a router, plan charging and return. People who separate from the router lose that connection.
