How do I get mobile data and internet in Korea?

The best eSIM in South Korea: How to Buy an eSIM in South Korea (2026) — CyberPlus

Compare four ways to connect

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile installed on a compatible phone. A physical SIM provides service through a removable card. Check the exact phone model, regional variant and carrier-lock status before buying either.

A rented portable Wi-Fi router, sometimes called pocket Wi-Fi, shares a mobile connection with nearby devices. It can suit people travelling together, but everyone needs to remain within range, and the router needs charging and return arrangements.

Roaming uses your home carrier's partner network. Check whether Korea is already included in your plan and compare the whole-trip cost before purchasing another service.

Read the actual plan terms

Compare validity, activation timing, high-speed allowance, reduced speed after that allowance, hotspot support and customer service. Installation and activation are not always the same event; follow the seller's instructions.

If you need ordinary calls or text messages, choose a plan that explicitly includes them. Data-only service can support internet messaging and calls through apps, but it does not itself provide carrier voice calls or SMS.

For airport collection, confirm the terminal, counter and both pickup and activation hours. Bring your passport and the booking details requested by the provider.

Separate a phone number from identity verification

A Korean number can make you reachable for calls, booking updates and text codes if the plan supports those services. It does not automatically support 본인인증, the subscriber-based identity check used by some Korean services.

Many passport-issued tourist plans do not support that check. Ask the provider about the exact product, and look for a service's visitor registration route instead of buying another SIM without confirming eligibility.

Keep access to your home number if existing accounts send codes there. Check roaming charges and automatic data-switching settings before leaving both lines enabled.

Use public Wi-Fi as an additional connection

Airports, accommodation, cafés and some public locations provide Wi-Fi, but coverage and reliability vary. Confirm the network name with the operator and follow its connection instructions.

Save your accommodation address, booking details and important routes offline. Do not depend on finding a working hotspot at every street corner or when a taxi or booking code is needed urgently.

Prepare useful apps

Naver Map and KakaoMap are Korean navigation apps. Papago is a translation app from Naver, a Korean search and online-services company. KakaoTalk is a messaging app used by many people and businesses in Korea.

Set up the navigation, translation, taxi and reservation services you expect to use. Open each app, choose its language and test account access before departure. A global or visitor version may offer different payment and registration options.

Check your device's power requirements and the airline's battery rules separately when packing. A plug adapter does not convert voltage.
