Autumn foliage season and where to see it

Expect different timing by location

Autumn colour generally develops earlier at higher elevations and in cooler northeastern areas, with lower and more southerly locations often following later. Tree species, recent weather and local exposure also affect the timing.

October and November offer opportunities across different regions, but no single week covers every destination. A mountain summit and its valley can look different on the same day.

Read the forecast carefully

First colour means the change has begun; peak colour describes a later stage with more foliage showing autumn colours. Different organisations may measure different species or use different thresholds, so their dates are not always directly comparable.

Check the current Korea Forest Service forecast when available and the Korea Meteorological Administration's observed foliage reports during the seasonal service period. Recent local photographs can help you judge the place you want to visit.

Past peak dates help with broad planning, but they do not guarantee next year's timing. Keep other activities available if colour develops earlier or later than expected.

Choose a city walk

In Seoul, consider the Deoksugung stone-wall road, Seoul Forest, Olympic Park or a suitable Namsan route. These offer different combinations of trees, paths and city views.

Check the exact route if you need step-free access. A park can contain both accessible paths and steep or stepped sections; the park's name alone does not establish that an entire circuit suits a wheelchair or stroller.

Changdeokgung's Huwon garden has separate admission and timed entry arrangements. Book or check availability before including it in the day.

Choose a mountain route that suits you

Seoraksan, Odaesan, Songnisan, Naejangsan and Hallasan are among the mountain areas known for autumn scenery. Each contains routes with different distances, gradients and access requirements.

Check the park's current trail information, reservations and closures. Bring suitable footwear, warm layers, water and enough time to return before dark. A valley walk can be a better choice than a summit route if your aim is simply to enjoy the trees.

Check cable cars and crowded access roads

The Seorak Cable Car publishes its ticketing arrangements and operating information. Check these directly rather than assuming that another cable car's booking rules apply. Wind and other weather can interrupt service.

Popular foliage destinations can have long queues, parking restrictions or shuttle arrangements on peak weekends. Consider a weekday, public transport or an earlier start, and leave time for the return journey.
