Understand the flowering stages
First bloom (개화) means flowers have begun opening on the tree being observed. Full bloom (만개) describes a much fuller display. A first-bloom date is not a promise that every tree in the city will look its best that day.
Full bloom often follows within about a week, but temperature, wind and rain can change the pace and shorten the display. Different varieties and shaded or exposed locations can flower at different times nearby.
Use the regional pattern without treating it as a guarantee
Southern lowland areas, including parts of Jeju and Busan, often flower before Seoul. Higher elevations and cooler locations may flower later.
A trip with flexible day trips or more than one region gives you options, but a south-to-north route does not guarantee blossom. Choose destinations you will enjoy even if the flowers open early or late.
Check forecasts and observations
The Korea Meteorological Administration's spring-flower page reports observed flowering at selected locations during its seasonal service period.
Forecast maps published by weather companies and tourism organisations estimate future flowering dates. Check the source, publication date and whether a date refers to first or full bloom.
Use current observations as your trip approaches and while you are travelling. Recent years do not establish that the next season will be equally early, so avoid choosing dates solely by adding or subtracting days from last year's peak.
Choose places that fit your route
In Seoul, Yeouido's riverside area, Seokchon Lake and Seoul Forest are well-known blossom destinations. Gyeongju's Bomun Lake offers lakeside walks, while Jinhae, part of Changwon, is known for Yeojwacheon stream and the Gyeonghwa Station area.
Check access arrangements and local crowd controls for the actual day. Popular locations can be busy, especially on weekends, and a photograph of an empty walkway does not show typical festival conditions.
Book festivals as events
Jinhae Gunhangje, the Yeouido spring-flower festival and Seokchon Lake's blossom festival publish programmes for each year. Check those current announcements rather than carrying last year's dates into a new itinerary.
A festival may continue when flowers are early, late or past their peak. Book it for the event as well as the scenery, and choose flexible accommodation terms where practical.
Stay on permitted paths, do not climb or shake trees, and leave enough time to return through festival crowds.
