Compare the climate averages

These are 1991–2020 climate averages, not a forecast for your visit. The daily high and low columns average many days over that period; they are not limits on how hot or cold a particular day can become. Precipitation is the average monthly total.

Expect a gradual and uneven arrival of spring

March brings rising average temperatures, but it is not consistently warm. Morning and evening conditions can differ sharply from a sunny afternoon, especially inland.

The Korean expression 꽃샘추위 describes a returning spring cold spell. Snow and freezing conditions are still possible in some places, particularly at higher elevations. Check the forecast rather than packing only for the monthly mean.

A layered outfit and a wind-resistant outer jacket let you adjust during the day. Keep suitable footwear for wet ground and occasional slippery surfaces.

Check air quality as well as temperature

Spring can bring fine-particle pollution and Asian dust, windblown dust that can reach Korea from continental source regions. They are related air-quality concerns but are not identical measurements.

Use Air Korea for current readings and forecasts. If pollution is high, follow the local health guidance and consider moving strenuous outdoor activities to another time, especially if you are sensitive to poor air quality.

A well-fitting particulate mask can be useful when recommended, but it does not make every outdoor activity appropriate during a severe episode.

Follow flowering reports, not fixed expectations

Southern destinations such as Gwangyang and Gurye are known for early plum and cornelian-cherry blossoms. Their festivals often fall in March, but the programme and flowering stage vary each year.

Check the organiser's current dates and local flowering reports before a long trip. A festival date is not a guarantee of peak flowers, and flowering may begin before or continue after an event.

Cherry blossoms generally develop later than these early flowers, with timing varying by region and weather. Do not assume that every Seoul street will be in bloom simply because the calendar says spring.

Check the early-March holiday

Independence Movement Day is 1 March. In 2026, a substitute holiday on 2 March creates a long weekend; in 2027, 1 March itself is a Monday.

Reserve important journeys if you travel during the holiday period and check venue closures. The start of the school year does not guarantee that weekday attractions will be empty.

Palaces change from winter to spring schedules at different times. Use the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center for the relevant site's current hours and last entry.

Keep skiing plans separate from spring sightseeing

Some ski resorts continue operating into March, while individual runs may close earlier. Check the resort's current snow report, lift status and booking conditions before travelling.

A trip combining ski slopes and southern flowers can involve very different temperatures and substantial travel. Allow time for both rather than treating the entire country as one season.
