When is the best time of year to visit Korea?

Watch it done

Choose a season for the trip you want

Spring and autumn are often comfortable for sightseeing on foot. April and May offer spring flowers and increasingly warm afternoons. October brings cooler weather and autumn colour in many areas, though the timing varies with altitude and location.

Summer is hot and humid, with substantial rain possible. It can suit beach visits and seasonal events, provided you allow for weather disruptions. Winter suits travellers interested in winter scenery and skiing, but requires warm clothing and attention to snow or ice warnings.

Conditions differ across the country. Jeju's coastal towns are generally milder in winter than Seoul, but Hallasan, Jeju's high mountain, can have severe winter conditions.

Allow flexibility for flowers and foliage

Cherry blossoms often appear earlier in southern lowland areas than in Seoul, but each year's weather changes the timing. A first-bloom date is not the same as full bloom, and observations from one tree do not describe every park.

Use the Korea Meteorological Administration's seasonal observations and current local reports as your visit approaches. Book a spring trip with other activities you will enjoy even if the flowering period moves.

Autumn colour also varies by species, elevation and weather. Mountain foliage can peak before city trees, while some southern destinations retain colour into November. Check reports for the actual destination instead of applying one national peak date.

Plan for summer rain and heat

Korea's main summer rainy season usually begins during June and extends into July, with timing that varies by region and year. Rain does not stop when that season ends: August and September can also bring heavy rain and typhoons.

Keep indoor activities available and check forecasts before hiking, swimming or taking a ferry. Follow local closures during severe weather. Heat and humidity also call for regular water, shade and rest breaks.

Check the holiday calendar

Seollal is Korean Lunar New Year, and Chuseok is the autumn harvest holiday. Both can bring busy intercity transport and temporary business closures. Some attractions remain open or offer special programmes, so check individual venues.

The public-holiday breaks are 16–18 February and 24–26 September in 2026, and 6–9 February and 14–16 September in 2027. Surrounding weekends can extend time off and travel demand.

Other public holidays can create busy long weekends too. Check the calendar for your travel year rather than assuming a month is quiet because it falls outside summer.

Pack for changing conditions

Spring and autumn can have warm afternoons followed by chilly evenings. Bring layers and an outer layer suitable for the forecast. In winter, add insulation, gloves and protection from the wind.

Use 1991–2020 climate averages to compare seasons, then use a current forecast for packing and daily decisions. Average highs and lows are not the hottest or coldest temperatures you might experience.
