Do people speak English, and what do I do when they don't?

Prepare for different levels of English

English availability varies between people and venues. Tourist information desks, larger hotels and major attractions may offer English assistance, but an individual staff member or driver may not speak it.

Begin politely, speak clearly and keep questions short. If words are not enough, show a name, address, booking reference or photograph that makes the question specific. Do not assume that someone cannot speak English solely because of their job or location.

Ask 1330 for tourism-related help

1330 is the Korea Tourism Organization's travel helpline. It can help with tourism information, interpretation and complaint guidance. Explain the situation and ask how to involve the other person in the conversation.

Call 1330 within Korea or use the contact options on the official service page, including online voice calls and chat. The overseas number is +82 2 1330. Check current language availability and hours rather than assuming every language is staffed around the clock.

Interpretation helps people communicate; it does not guarantee a booking, refund or other outcome. Stay involved and confirm important details.

Use BBB Korea for volunteer interpretation

BBB Korea provides volunteer telephone interpretation in its supported languages. Within Korea, call 1588-5644 and follow the language prompts. Its app also supports connecting another person to a conversation.

Interpretation is free, but telephone or data charges can apply. A volunteer may not be available immediately, and the service does not replace a qualified interpreter for every professional or specialist matter.

For an emergency, call 112 for police or 119 for fire, an ambulance or rescue first, and ask the dispatcher for language assistance.

Prepare a translation app

Papago is a translation app from Naver, a Korean search and online-services company. Google Translate and supported phone translation features are other options for text, speech and images.

Try the features you need before travelling. Download any supported language packs and test each offline feature with Wi-Fi and mobile data turned off. Offline text support does not establish that camera or conversation mode also works offline.

Take a clear image of the whole sentence for camera translation and check names, prices, dates and units. For allergies, medical instructions or another important decision, get suitable human help and confirm understanding.

Learn a few useful words and letters

안녕하세요 means “hello”, 감사합니다 means “thank you”, and 죄송합니다 means “sorry”. Polite phrases can make an exchange easier even when you continue in English or through translation.

Hangul is the Korean alphabet. Its modern basic set has 14 consonants and 10 vowels, with additional doubled consonants and compound vowels. Learning the structure helps you recognise names, but accurate reading and understanding take practice.

Korean also uses two number systems. For prices, one useful word is 만, meaning ten thousand: 삼만 원 is ₩30,000. Ask to see an amount written if you are unsure.

Keep useful information on your phone

Save a destination's Korean name, address, map pin and contact number. Keep an English version alongside it if that helps you recognise the place.

You can copy and paste Korean without installing a Korean keyboard. Enlarge the text when showing it to someone, and save important screenshots or documents so they open without a connection.
