Choose the kind of karaoke visit you want
A noraebang (노래방) is a private karaoke room where you sing with friends or on your own. A coin noraebang (코인노래방) usually has small booths, while an ordinary hourly venue may provide a larger room with seating.
Licensed drinking and entertainment venues can also offer singing. They are different from an ordinary 노래연습장, or singing-practice business. If you want a straightforward karaoke visit, check the venue's description, price and services rather than relying only on a decorative sign or the English word “karaoke”.
Ask about the total charge before entering, particularly if drinks or other services are offered.
At a coin-operated booth
Read the price and payment instructions before inserting money. Some machines sell a number of songs, others sell time, and some offer both. Cash and card availability vary.
Start with a small amount until you understand the system. Unused credit or a song cancelled after starting may not be refundable, so check the displayed policy.
Choose a booth that fits your group and keep bags clear of the equipment and door. Singing alone is a normal option; you do not need a group to book a booth.
At an hourly room
Confirm the room's price, the length of the session and whether charges vary by party size or time of day. Ask when to pay and whether drinks or snacks are included.
Some owners add complimentary time, called 서비스, but the amount depends on the venue and how busy it is. Do not plan around receiving extra time or assume that every extension on the screen is free; ask if unclear.
Find your song
Common machine brands include TJ Media and KY. Search using the on-screen catalogue, remote control, songbook or the relevant brand's catalogue.
Song numbers differ between brands. A code from one system may not select the same song on another.
English-language pop and Japanese songs are available in many catalogues, alongside Korean songs. Other languages and individual titles depend on the machine and its updates. Check the actual catalogue rather than assuming that a particular song will be included.
Use the main controls
시작 means “start”, and 예약 adds a song to the queue. 취소 cancels a selection or song, depending on the screen and machine. Check before cancelling if paid credit may be used.
키 adjusts the musical key, 템포 adjusts the tempo, and 에코 adjusts the echo effect. You can lower a song's key if it is uncomfortable to sing, or ask staff for help.
Take turns choosing songs and keep microphone volume comfortable. A machine's score is part of the entertainment, not a professional assessment of your singing.
Follow the venue's rules
Ordinary singing-practice businesses are distinct from licensed bars and do not offer the same alcohol service. Do not bring alcohol without checking; a venue refusing it may be complying with its licence.
Children and teenagers face specific entry and late-night restrictions, including rules about supervision. Check with the venue before planning a family or late-night visit, and carry accepted ID if requested.
Follow no-smoking signs and keep the booth clean. Opening hours, refund policies and whether staff are present differ, so confirm anything important before paying.
