[SUB/PDF] 100 Korean Travel Phrases for Beginners — Learn Korean with Hoya

Use polite expressions with strangers

The phrases here use polite Korean suitable for everyday conversations with staff and people you do not know. Many end in 요, while expressions such as 감사합니다 (“thank you”) and 죄송합니다 (“sorry”) use a more formal ending. Learn each expression as written; do not add 요 to a phrase that already has a polite ending.

Casual speech is used in close relationships and other appropriate settings. As a visitor, polite expressions are a useful default when you are unsure.

Start with these five expressions

EnglishKoreanRomanised
Hello. / Excuse me, hello.안녕하세요.annyeonghaseyo
Thank you.감사합니다.gamsahamnida
Sorry. / Excuse me.죄송합니다.joesonghamnida
Excuse me — (to get attention)저기요.jeogiyo
Please give me ___.___ 주세요.___ juseyo

주세요 means “please give me” and follows the thing you are requesting. For example, 물 주세요 means “Water, please”, 계산서 주세요 means “The bill, please”, and 봉투 주세요 means “A bag, please”.

Use 저기요 to get someone's attention politely. In a restaurant, 여기요 can also attract a server's attention. If the table has a call button, you can press it instead.

Greeting, thanking and apologising

안녕하세요 means “hello”. You can use it when entering a shop, approaching a counter or beginning a conversation with a stranger. It works at different times of day.

Both 감사합니다 and 고맙습니다 are polite ways to say “thank you”. 죄송합니다 expresses an apology. Use 실례합니다 when politely interrupting or asking to intrude, and 잠시만요 when asking someone to wait a moment or let you pass. The Standard Korean Dictionary explains the use of 실례 in asking someone's understanding.

EnglishKoreanRomanised
Thank you. (native form)고맙습니다.gomapseumnida
Excuse me — may I trouble you?실례합니다.sillyehamnida
One moment / coming through.잠시만요.jamsimanyo
It's all right. / Never mind.괜찮아요.gwaenchanayo
Goodbye. (you are leaving)안녕히 계세요.annyeonghi gyeseyo
Goodbye. (they are leaving)안녕히 가세요.annyeonghi gaseyo

Say 안녕히 계세요 when you are leaving and the other person is staying. Say 안녕히 가세요 to someone who is leaving, including when you are both going elsewhere.

Ordering food

You can request a dish by saying its name, the quantity and 주세요. The expression 2인분 주세요 means “Two portions, please”; a portion's size depends on the dish and restaurant. Check the menu or ask if you are unsure how much to order.

EnglishKoreanRomanised
Two of these, please.이거 두 개 주세요.igeo du gae juseyo
Two portions, please. (grilled meat)2인분 주세요.i-inbun juseyo
Do you have an English menu?영어 메뉴 있어요?yeong-eo menyu isseoyo?
What do you recommend?뭐가 맛있어요?mwoga masisseoyo?
Is it very spicy?많이 매워요?mani maewoyo?
Not spicy, please.안 맵게 해주세요.an maepge haejuseyo
Water, please.물 좀 주세요.mul jom juseyo
A side plate, please.앞접시 주세요.apjeopsi juseyo
One more, please.하나 더 주세요.hana deo juseyo
Could I get a container for this?남은 거 포장돼요?nameun geo pojangdwaeyo?

좀 literally means “a little” and can soften a request. Both 물 주세요 and 물 좀 주세요 are ordinary ways to ask politely for water.

Paying and the bill

Many Korean restaurants take payment at a counter when you leave. Ask the server where to pay if you are unsure.

EnglishKoreanRomanised
The bill, please. / Let's settle up.계산해 주세요.gyesanhae juseyo
How much is it?얼마예요?eolmayeyo?
Do you take cards?카드 되나요?kadeu doenayo?
Separate bills, please.따로 계산해 주세요.ttaro gyesanhae juseyo
Together, please.같이 계산할게요.gachi gyesanhalgeyo
A receipt, please.영수증 주세요.yeongsujeung juseyo

Tipping is generally not expected in ordinary restaurants and taxis. Pay the stated total and ask if you do not understand a charge.

Asking where something is

The examples below show how to ask where something is and how to get there.

EnglishKoreanRomanised
Where is the toilet?화장실이 어디예요?hwajangsiri eodiyeyo?
Where is the subway station?지하철역이 어디예요?jihacheollyeogi eodiyeyo?
Is it far?멀어요?meoreoyo?
How do I get there?어떻게 가요?eotteoke gayo?
Is there a convenience store nearby?근처에 편의점 있어요?geuncheoe pyeonuijeom isseoyo?

Subway exit numbers can make meeting points and directions easier to follow. Look for numbered exit signs and check the station map.

In a taxi

Show the destination's name, address and map pin if the driver needs clarification. A saved Korean version can be especially useful when the English spelling varies between listings. Make the screen readable and confirm the destination before setting off.

EnglishKoreanRomanised
Please take me here. (holding up the screen)여기로 가주세요.yeogiro gajuseyo
Please stop here.여기 세워 주세요.yeogi sewo juseyo
Please open the boot.트렁크 좀 열어 주세요.teureongkeu jom yeoreo juseyo
Could you call this number, please?이 번호로 전화 좀 해주시겠어요?i beonhoro jeonhwa jom haejusigesseoyo?

Shopping and price

EnglishKoreanRomanised
How much is this?이거 얼마예요?igeo eolmayeyo?

Do you have another colour?다른 색깔 있어요?dareun saekkkal isseoyo?
Could you make it a bit cheaper?조금만 깎아 주세요.jogeumman kkakka juseyo
I'm just looking, thank you.그냥 구경하고 있어요.geunyang gugyeonghago isseoyo
Can I get a tax refund?택스리펀드 되나요?taekseuripeondeu doenayo?

Some market sellers may discuss a price, but bargaining is not expected everywhere. Department stores, chain shops and many stalls use fixed prices. Ask courteously and accept the answer.

Allergies and dietary requirements

Show a clear written explanation of your allergy or dietary restriction. Ask about ingredients, broth, sauces and shared preparation equipment. A restaurant may be unable to remove an ingredient from a dish that is already prepared.

Kimchi may contain fish sauce or salted seafood, and soups or noodles may use meat or anchovy stock. Check the actual recipe rather than relying on the dish's appearance. For sesame or another ingredient you must avoid, read the complete ingredient information and ask specifically; do not rely only on a highlighted allergen statement.

For a serious allergy, use a professionally checked translation card and ask the restaurant to confirm whether it can prepare the food safely. The phrases below help communicate, but they do not establish that a meal is safe.

EnglishKoreanRomanised
I have a ___ allergy.저는 ___ 알레르기가 있어요.jeoneun ___ allereugiga isseoyo
Even a little is dangerous.조금이라도 위험해요.jogeumirado wiheomhaeyo

Please leave it out completely.아예 빼주세요.aye ppaejuseyo
I do not eat pork.저는 돼지고기 안 먹어요.jeoneun dwaejigogi an meogeoyo

Emergencies and pain

Call 119 for fire, an ambulance or rescue, and 112 for police. “Emergency numbers (112 police, 119 fire/ambulance)” covers what happens when you dial them, and “Pharmacy, clinic, or ER?” covers pharmacies, clinics and hospitals.

EnglishKoreanRomanised
Help me, please!도와주세요!dowajuseyo!
