Write down the details while they are fresh
Record the last place you remember having the item and the approximate time. For a train, include the service, direction, carriage and seat if known. For a taxi, keep the registration number, receipt or app journey record.
Describe distinctive features that can identify the item without publishing sensitive information. A colour and brand help, but a unique mark or the contents known only to the owner can be more useful when confirming ownership.
Contact the operator or venue promptly
For a subway loss, speak to station staff or the operator's lost-property office. For a train, contact the railway with the date and service details. Keep the ticket or transit-card information available, but do not assume a card identifies the exact train by itself.
For a taxi booked through Kakao T, the Korean taxi-hailing app, use the trip history and current driver-contact or support options. If you hailed the taxi, use the receipt to identify the company or payment-service contact. A hotel, shop or restaurant may keep found items at its own desk.
Ask where the item may be transferred and how to follow up. Holding periods differ; do not assume every operator keeps everything for exactly one week.
Search the police lost-property service too
The police's 경찰민원24 portal provides civil services including lost-property reporting and found-item searches. Check the photographs, description and holding location for a possible match. You can search while contacting the operator rather than waiting for a fixed period to pass.
If the Korean interface is difficult, ask someone to help read it. 182 is the police civil-service contact for guidance. Use 112 instead if a theft or other incident needs urgent police assistance.
Confirm collection arrangements
Contact the office holding the item before travelling there. Ask what identification or proof of ownership is needed, its collection hours and whether an authorised person or delivery is possible.
Found-property rules can include a claim period and a finder's reward. Ask the holding authority how those rules apply to the item rather than assuming every return requires the same payment or deadline.
Protect accounts and documents while you search
If payment cards are missing, contact the issuer to freeze or block them as appropriate. Use your phone provider's lost-device tools if a phone is missing, and avoid sharing verification codes with someone claiming to have found it.
For a lost passport, contact your embassy or consulate and read “What do I do if I lose my passport in Korea?”. A promising lost-property search should not delay urgent account protection or travel-document advice.
