Ask the insurer what it needs
Contact the insurer's assistance or claims service and ask for the requirements for your particular claim. A minor outpatient visit and a hospital admission may require different evidence. Check whether the insurer needs original documents, digital copies, an English version or a certified translation.
Do not assume every claim requires every available certificate. Some documents have fees, so confirm what is needed before ordering them.
Know the Korean document names
| Document | What it provides |
|---|---|
| Receipt, 영수증 | This records the payment made. |
| Itemised medical bill, 진료비 세부내역서 | This lists the medical charges separately. |
| Diagnosis certificate, 진단서 | A doctor issues this certificate with the relevant diagnosis and other required information. |
| Prescription, 처방전 | This records the medicines prescribed. |
| Admission and discharge confirmation, 입퇴원확인서 | This confirms the dates of a hospital stay. |
Ask the billing desk which office issues each document, what it costs and when it will be ready. A doctor's certificate may need the treating clinician's involvement and may not be available immediately.
Ask at the desk before leaving
| English | Korean |
|---|---|
| Could I get a medical certificate in English? | |
| I also need an itemised medical bill. | |
| This is for a travel insurance claim. | |
| How much will these documents cost? | |
| When can I collect them? |
Check the name and dates on the documents before leaving. Keep clear copies as a backup, and retain originals until the insurer confirms what it needs.
Submit the claim within the applicable deadline
Follow the policy's notification and submission instructions. The deadline is the one in your policy.
If you cannot obtain a document in time, contact the insurer before the deadline and ask how to proceed. Keep the claim reference and a record of the instructions you receive.
Request missing records after the visit
Contact the hospital's records or billing office using its official details. Ask what identification, consent, payment and delivery arrangements are required. If someone will collect records for you, confirm the authorisation requirements first.
The available process varies by hospital and document. Do not assume sensitive medical records can simply be emailed to anyone who asks.
