Choosing souvenirs to bring home

Shopping at the National Museum of Korea Gift Shop 🛍️ So Cute! | Heritage Hotspots — Koreanet

Find gifts inspired by museum collections

MU:DS is the museum-gift brand run by the National Museum Foundation of Korea. Its products adapt objects and paintings from museum collections into gifts such as badges, stationery, cups and decorative pieces.

Examples include a magpie-and-tiger badge and a colour-changing cup set based on figures in a Kim Hong-do painting. Check the current catalogue for availability and prices; popular designs can sell out.

The National Museum of Korea has several shops and a MU:DS showroom. Use the foundation's facilities page to check their locations and opening hours. The National Palace Museum also has a shop.

Ask how a craft piece was made

A craft's heritage designation recognises a tradition and its practitioners. It does not mean that every object sold under the craft's name was made by a recognised master.

CraftWhat to look for
Mother-of-pearl lacquerware, 나전칠기Pieces use shell inlay to create patterns. Ask about the base material, lacquer and maker, especially when comparing a small souvenir with expensive handmade work.
Bronze tableware, 유기Bowls and cutlery may be cast or hammered. 방짜유기 refers to the hammered tradition. Ask about care instructions and suitability for everyday use.
Hanji, 한지This traditional paper is made from mulberry bark. Shops sell individual sheets, notebooks, fans and other paper goods; materials and manufacturing methods vary.
Ceramics, 도자기Ask who made the piece, whether it is intended for food and whether it is safe for a dishwasher or microwave if those uses matter to you.

Tongyeong is associated with mother-of-pearl lacquerware, and Jeonju with hanji. In Seoul, Insadong has shops selling crafts, paper and calligraphy supplies. You do not have to travel to a production centre to buy a well-made gift, but a studio visit can help you meet the maker.

Visit a ceramics studio if you enjoy pottery

Icheon is a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. Its ceramics destinations include the Yes Park arts village and Sagimakgol pottery village. Check individual studios' hours and whether they accept visitors before travelling.

Ask the seller to pack ceramics for your journey. For an expensive piece, discuss insurance and responsibility for damage if the shop arranges shipping. A reproduction can be a perfectly suitable gift; what matters is that it is accurately described.

Choose food and drink that will travel well

Tea: Boseong and Hadong are well-known tea-growing areas. Compare the type, harvest, quantity and brewing instructions rather than assuming that every Korean tea is inexpensive.

Seaweed: Seasoned seaweed and seaweed snacks are light, but packages can be bulky and delicate. Read the ingredients if the recipient has an allergy or dietary restriction.

Other pantry gifts: Chilli powder, sesame oil and citron syrup can be useful gifts for someone who cooks. Check leakage risk, baggage weight and your destination's rules for food imports.

Traditional liquor: Department-store liquor sections, specialist shops and producers sell Korean traditional drinks. Distilled soju is a Korean spirit, and yakju is a clear fermented rice wine. Styles, alcohol strength, bottle size and storage needs vary. Do not assume that every bottle should be stored at room temperature.

Check the airline's baggage rules and the destination's alcohol allowance before buying. Rules for ordering alcohol online in Korea are separate from the rules for carrying it home.

Choose for the recipient, not a souvenir ranking

A magnet, a T-shirt or a museum reproduction can be a good gift if the recipient likes it. For a handmade or locally produced object, ask about its origin and maker rather than judging by the design alone. Compare prices and descriptions when a seller claims that a piece is rare or antique.

An object that may be protected cultural heritage can require export checks. Read “What you cannot take out of Korea” before buying an antique, and leave time to obtain any necessary clearance.

Check payment, packing and refund arrangements

Ask the shop which payment methods it accepts. For an eligible purchase at a participating retailer, the visitor VAT refund—a refund of value-added tax—starts at a transaction amount of ₩15,000. Bring your passport and ask about the process before paying.

For heavy or fragile purchases, compare the cost of extra baggage with shipping. “Shipping purchases home” explains the checks to make before posting a parcel.
