Buy the handset separately from the mobile plan
A SIM-free phone, called 자급제 in Korean, is sold without a carrier contract. You can buy one through a manufacturer or retailer and arrange mobile service separately. KAIT's official guide explains this purchasing route.
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile installed on the phone instead of a removable card. Before paying, confirm that the phone is unlocked. Then check the exact model number with your home carrier: an unlocked phone still needs compatible network bands and the right physical SIM or eSIM support. The same product name can cover different regional models.
A carrier offer may bundle the phone with a subscription, instalments or a discount tied to a particular plan. Ask for the total cost and cancellation terms. Do not compare a subsidised contract price directly with the price of a handset sold on its own.
Check camera behaviour on the exact model
Some phones sold for the Korean market have restrictions on muting the camera shutter.
Apple's current camera guide says the shutter cannot be muted in some countries and regions. Ask the manufacturer about the exact model and software version if quiet photography matters to you. Do not assume that travelling abroad will either remove or preserve a restriction.
Ask the carrier which documents it accepts
Buying a phone does not automatically make you eligible for a Korean mobile contract. Carriers have identity-verification, payment and plan requirements, and long-term residents and short-term visitors may qualify for different services.
Korea's telecommunications enforcement decree includes passports among documents that may be accepted when verifying a foreign customer's identity. That does not mean every carrier must offer every visitor a subsidised handset or an instalment plan. Ask the provider about the particular offer.
A prepaid tourist SIM is a separate purchase. “Where to buy and activate a Korean SIM” explains that route.
Confirm overseas service before buying
Samsung: Ask Samsung in your home country whether it can service the exact Korean model and whether the repair would be covered. Samsung Korea's cross-border service guidance describes country-of-sale terms, service limitations and parts availability.
Apple: Apple's warranty terms allow it to restrict iPhone warranty service to the original country of sale. This does not mean every overseas repair is automatically charged, but you should confirm available service before relying on it.
Keep the dated receipt and the phone's IMEI, the identification number assigned to the handset. Ask what happens if a repair requires returning the phone to Korea, including who pays shipping and any related charges.
Compare the total price
Compare the exact model with the version sold at home. Include currency conversion, any eligible tourist tax refund, your destination's customs charges and possible service costs. Store promotions can change, so check the price and conditions on the day you buy.
At a participating shop, an eligible purchase may qualify for the tourist tax refund. Bring your passport, request the refund paperwork and follow the export requirements. The minimum transaction amount is ₩15,000, but the amount alone does not establish eligibility.
