Use the counter named on your order
Screenshot your voucher and collection instructions. Follow your operator’s current directions: airport and retailer pages can disagree about a floor or access point.
Hyundai’s guide gives these routes:
| Terminal | Directions |
|---|---|
| Incheon T1 west | 4F, opposite Gate 43 |
| Incheon Concourse | 4F, near Gate 119 |
| Incheon T2 west | Down to 2F from near Gate 225 |
| Incheon T2 east | Toward Gate 274, down to 2F opposite the culture centre |
| Gimpo international | 4F, opposite Gate 34 |
These are Hyundai’s published directions, not a guarantee that every operator assigns the same counter. Check the order before taking a terminal train or walking to a distant gate.
When ordering closes
Order deadlines depend on the airport, flight, shop and stock location, and Hyundai's order-time table shows how differently they fall:
| Airport | Cut-off |
|---|---|
| Incheon T1 / T2, Gimpo | Same-day or previous-day, between 11:30 and 19:30, depending on departure time |
| Jeju | 19:30 two days before, for departures 00:00–14:59; previous day for later departures |
| Gimhae | 14:30 two days before, for departures 00:00–08:59; previous day for later departures |
| Cheongju | 15:00 two days before, for departures 00:00–05:29; previous day for later departures |
| Incheon Ferry Terminal | 19:30 two days before for departures before 09:00; previous day for later departures |
Hyundai advertises purchases up to 90 days before departure; other operators may differ. Check the deadline for your exact departure before choosing products. Some routes require ordering two days ahead.
What to bring, and what happens at the counter
You present the exchange voucher, your passport and your boarding pass — or the voucher number plus your passport where it was issued electronically — the staff confirm you are the buyer, and you sign. Follow the counter’s queue instructions; some use passport-scanning ticket kiosks.
Two situations the rules handle, worth knowing before you panic:
- Lost voucher. Ask the operator to retrieve the order. Hyundai says a voucher-number screenshot can be presented with your passport and boarding pass.
- If your passport is reissued after purchase, update the retailer. The counter cannot simply hand over — a customs officer checks your entry and exit record and decides. Tell the shop when your passport changes rather than discovering this at the counter.
How long to allow
Follow your operator’s collection guidance: Shilla asks you to collect one to two hours before departure, Hyundai at least one hour — and those are minimums for the handover, not for everything before it. Allow time for each step: check-in, bag drop, security, immigration, a walk of several hundred metres to a counter that may be a floor away, then the queue. Allow additional time for queues and walking, and prioritise your flight if collection becomes too tight. Queue lengths vary.
If you miss the counter
Contact the seller immediately. You normally cannot collect a departure order on arrival. A later departure or cancellation may be possible under the seller’s terms; automatic overseas mailing is not a reliable fallback.
| Operator | What its own terms say |
|---|---|
| Shilla (신라면세점) | Goods return to the shop and are held 10 days, then the sale is cancelled. You may collect on a later departure, or take a refund after you get home. |
| Lotte (롯데인터넷면세점) | Held 15 days from the scheduled departure date; after that, the goods may be returned and the order cancelled. Its separate refund clause provides repayment within three business days of returned goods. |
| Hyundai (현대면세점) | Uncollected goods cannot be collected on arrival and are not mailed; the order is automatically cancelled one month after the departure date. |
Ask the seller which refund or later-collection option applies. Keep your order contact details usable so the seller can reach you — give one you can still answer from home.
Why collection is tied to departure
Most downtown and online goods use a bonded departure-pickup process. The government’s legal guide also describes exceptions: eligible foreign customers can receive Korean-made goods downtown, and overseas dispatch may be arranged separately when buying. Neither exception means an ordinary missed-pickup order will be sent to your home.
Use the handover method confirmed on your receipt. An arrival duty-free shop is a different service; it is not somewhere to retrieve an uncollected departure order.
What to do
- Check the order deadline before choosing goods. Some flights and airports require ordering two days ahead.
- Screenshot the voucher and the counter location the moment you order.
- Allow time for collection before optional airport stops, while keeping your boarding deadline in view.
- Update the shop if your passport or flight changes. Both are booked against the goods.
- Check that your schedule leaves time for collection before buying on a tight itinerary.
