Department store food halls in the basement

Watch it done

🇰🇷 Entire Basement of Glorious Food, Seoul (Food Avenue Lotte Department Store) — Fai Can Walk

Why the basement, and not the shop upstairs

Korean department stores make a large share of their money on food, and it shows in what the basement looks like. In the Ministry of Trade and Industry (산업통상부) survey of the country's 26 largest retailers, department stores took 16.7% of all sales in May 2026 and grew 24.5% year on year while the hypermarkets shrank. A big part of that growth is the food floor, which is why every chain has spent three years rebuilding one.

A large food hall can bring together a European bakery hall, a patisserie arcade, a wet-fish counter with the morning's catch, a butcher grading beef in front of you, a wall of kimchi and side dishes, a deli plating chef-run restaurant food into takeaway boxes, and a gift hall of lacquered boxes of ginseng, dried seaweed, honey and tea.

Three reasons to go even if you are not buying dinner. Some counters offer samples so you can try a product before buying. Gift counters can be useful, but check storage needs and destination import rules before buying food to take home. Food halls also offer indoor browsing in wet or cold weather.

The closing-time markdown, and when to arrive for it

Fresh food that cannot be carried over to tomorrow is discounted in the last hours before the doors shut, at all three big chains. Their own numbers, side by side: Lotte discounts from 18:00, by up to 50%, on food that will not keep; Shinsegae runs deli markdowns from 18:00 until closing; Hyundai marks down from 18:00 by up to 40%, largely through vouchers on its side-dish counters.

Check the branch’s hours first. Many branches close at 20:00 or 20:30, but schedules vary. Arrive around 18:30–19:00 and go straight to the deli (델리), the side dishes (반찬), the sushi and the fruit — the counters that cannot sell tomorrow. Bakery is marked down too but later and less predictably. Packaged goods and gift sets follow their own promotions rather than the fresh-food markdown schedule.

The catch is that Koreans know this perfectly well. The 18:00 rush has a name — 마감런, the closing run — and popular items can sell out before you arrive. The participating counters and discounts can change; the ceilings above are ceilings, not a schedule.

The five basements worth the trip, and the exit that takes you straight in

The two biggest deserve naming. Shinsegae Gangnam finished a two-year rebuild of its food floor on 29 August 2025, taking it to about 19,800 m², the largest in Korea — a dessert arcade (스위트파크), a premium food hall (하우스 오브 신세계), the grocery half (신세계 마켓) and a deli hall stitched together. And The Hyundai Seoul's B1, "Tasty Seoul", is 14,820 m² — bigger than two football pitches — with a food street, a wine hall and a market under one ceiling. Both are worth an hour even if you eat nothing.

Galleria (갤러리아) is another option: its Gourmet 494 (고메이494) at the Apgujeong Luxury Hall invented the Korean premium food hall, and it now has a second site in Hannam.

Getting in without going outside matters more than it sounds in July and January. Shinsegae Main and Shinsegae Gangnam both connect directly from the station to the food floor. The Hyundai Seoul is a 500 m underground walkway from Yeouido Station exit 3 — the exit number is the whole of it, because the other exits put you on the street.

What is and is not cheaper here

Compare the exact product and quantity with other shops. Prepared meals, ordinary groceries and packaged gifts can have different markups, and a presentation box may account for part of a gift’s price.

Evening markdowns can reduce the price of selected fresh food. Check the use-by date and storage instructions, and buy only what you can keep and use appropriately.

Samples, and how to take one

Tasting is built into the format. Counters put out cut fruit, sliced sausage, cubes of cheese, dumplings, rice cake and small paper cups of soup, and staff will press them on you. Take one. Say 감사합니다 (thank you). Walk on. Accepting a sample does not oblige you to buy. Ask before taking another sample.

Hours, the monthly closing day and the tax refund

Doors are 10:30 to 20:00, extended evenings to 20:30, restaurant floors to 21:30 or 22:00. That is early by most cities' standards — a basement is not a late-night option, and the marked-down window sits at the end of the day.

Each store can also have its own closing days, on its own store calendar, and the dates differ between chains and between branches of the same chain. A department store is not caught by the two-Sundays-a-month closure that shuts hypermarkets: the Distribution Industry Development Act (유통산업발전법 제12조의2) names hypermarkets (대형마트) and their smaller siblings only. A closing day at E-Mart therefore does not establish whether a nearby department store is open, and a department store's own dark day can land on any date. Check the branch's page before you build a day around one.

Participating counters may offer tourist tax refunds: instant refund at the till or a refund desk in store, a ₩15,000 minimum per transaction, and the passport on you at the moment of purchase, not produced afterwards.
