Start with your destinations and room location
Map the journeys from each possible hotel to the places you plan to visit. The northern historic districts and the business and shopping areas south of the river can involve substantial travel between them. Check the walking route to the station as well as the train time.
For a quiet stay, read recent reviews of the exact property and ask for a room away from bars, major roads and service areas. Neighbourhood descriptions are useful context, but they cannot predict the noise outside every room.
The state's own map of where visitors go
Korea designates Special Tourist Zones (관광특구) under the Tourism Promotion Act, and the register the tourism ministry keeps lists 36 nationwide as of May 2026, eight of them in Seoul. These official designations describe tourism areas; they do not rank the best neighbourhoods for your stay:
| Zone | Designated |
|---|---|
| Itaewon (이태원) | 1997-09-29 |
| Myeongdong · Namdaemun · Bukchang-dong · Da-dong · Mugyo-dong (명동·남대문·북창동·다동·무교동) | 2000-03-30 |
| Dongdaemun Fashion Town (동대문 패션타운) | 2002-05-23 |
| Jongno · Cheonggye (종로·청계) | 2006-03-30 |
| Jamsil (잠실) | 2012-03-15 |
| Gangnam MICE (강남마이스) | 2014-12-18 |
| Hongdae Culture and Arts (홍대 문화예술) | 2021-12-02 |
| Express Bus Terminal · Sebitseom (고터·세빛) | 2024-12-26 |
The last is new enough that the Seoul Tourism Organization's own overview still describes seven. The dates tell you something: Itaewon has been the designated international district for nearly thirty years, and Hongdae, with its own supporting ordinance, got the label only in 2021, long after it became the obvious answer for a young traveller.
Where the rooms are
The tourism ministry's registered accommodation figures for 31 December 2025 set the scale of the choice: Korea has 2,996 registered tourist accommodation businesses with 226,840 rooms, and Seoul holds 62,057 of them — 27% — with 26 five-star hotels against Jeju's 17 and Busan's 10. Availability still depends on your dates and budget. (Guesthouses, motels and short-term rentals sit outside the register, so every count is a floor.)
| Businesses | Rooms | |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul | 572 | 62,057 |
| Jeju | 409 | 33,101 |
| Gangwon | 265 | 29,176 |
| Busan | 382 | 18,982 |
| Incheon | 193 | 12,541 |
Compare the areas with your itinerary
Myeongdong (명동) — the default, and a good one
Central Seoul, on Line 4 at Myeongdong Station and Line 2 at Euljiro 1-ga. Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung are walkable, the airport bus stops here, and the street food and cosmetics shopping people come for are underneath you. Check the specific room size and nearby activity. This is a busy shopping district with many visitor services, and prices vary between restaurants and hotels.
Hongdae (홍대) — the same trip, louder
Around Hongik University Station, on Line 2, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line and the AREX all-stop airport train — a useful direct connection to Incheon Airport. The area offers live music, bars and many casual restaurants. Check recent noise reviews and the distance from bars and clubs if you want a quiet room. Allow more travel time to the palaces than from Myeongdong. The area also has busy shopping streets during the day.
Jongno and Insadong (종로 · 인사동) — the historic quarter
Inside the old city walls, with Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Jongmyo and Bukchon (a hillside district of traditional houses between Seoul's two main palaces) all within walking distance of each other; Lines 1, 3 and 5 meet at Jongno 3-ga. This is where a hanok stay makes sense. Evening activity varies: some palace streets are quiet, while areas around Jongno 3-ga have busy restaurants and bars.
Gangnam (강남) — business Seoul
South of the river along Teheran-ro, on Line 2 at Gangnam Station and the Sinbundang Line. The area has wide streets, office towers, restaurants and shopping. The wider Gangnam district also includes the COEX convention centre. Consider the travel time for your planned sights. It is 30–40 minutes from the palaces, the streets are built for cars rather than wandering, and you pay a premium for a district whose appeal is commercial. The Sinbundang Line also charges a surcharge on top of the normal fare.
Itaewon (이태원) — the international district
On Line 6 below Namsan, Korea's longest-standing foreign quarter and still the easiest place in the city to be served in English, find non-Korean food, or drink somewhere that expects you. Check your transport connections: many journeys require a transfer from Line 6, and Itaewon is hilly — the walk from the station is a climb in places, which “What "5 minutes from the station" means in practice” explains. The small streets are the same streets as the 2022 crowd disaster.
Seoul Station and Hoehyeon (서울역 · 회현) — the transport answer
The KTX (Korea's high-speed train network) terminus, the airport express terminus, Lines 1 and 4, and the Hoehyeon underground arcade to Namdaemun Market, with Namsan behind. Check the walk between the hotel and the station entrance. It can be convenient for an early train, but a dawn flight may require transport before the airport railway starts — “Getting from Incheon Airport into Seoul” explains the airport connections.
Seongsu (성수) — the fashionable one
On the north side of the Han River, with Line 2 access at Seongsu Station, a converted industrial quarter of concrete cafés, pop-up shops and Seoul Forest — with a concentration of cafés and shops. Compare available accommodation with your planned journeys and check the final train if you will be out late.
Yeouido (여의도) — the quiet one
The river island holding the National Assembly and the financial district, on Lines 5 and 9. The area has riverside parks and a spring cherry-blossom festival. Crowds and noise vary with events and location. Check the exact location for your plans. Yeouido has river parks, shopping centres and restaurants, while some office streets are quieter at weekends.
Beyond Seoul
In Busan, compare beach areas such as Haeundae, Gwangalli and Songjeong with the time needed to reach your other destinations. A beachfront address does not guarantee a quiet room, particularly near bars or events.
On Jeju, map your itinerary before choosing between Jeju City, Seogwipo or another part of the island. Journeys can take substantial time, so check bus routes or driving times from the actual accommodation.
The rule of thumb
First trip, under a week, no strong opinions: Myeongdong or Jongno. Both put you on foot from the things you came for, and the subway handles the rest. Second trip, or a trip about food and nightlife rather than history: Hongdae or Seongsu. Early flight, late arrival or a lot of intercity rail: Seoul Station, if the station location suits your schedule.
