SEOULLITE HOW-TO #3 | Korean Apartment heating systems - Become one with the Ondol — Rochele King

What is under the floor

Ondol (온돌) is one of the oldest continuously used heating systems on earth, and Korea treats it as heritage rather than plumbing: the Korea Heritage Service (국가유산청) designated ondol culture a National Intangible Heritage on 30 April 2018, with no individual holder, because it is a widely shared cultural practice. Its designation notice explains the whole feel of a Korean room in one sentence: unlike a European fireplace, heat from a fire passes beneath the floor before leaving through a flue. Remains of the technique go back to roughly the 3rd–1st centuries BC. The other half of the traditional house is the maru (마루), a raised unheated wooden floor for summer — winter room, summer room, one building.

The modern version is hot-water ondol. A gas boiler (보일러), usually on a utility balcony, heats water and circulates it through loops of pipe buried in each room's floor screed. Nothing burns underneath you and there is no smoke; the principle remains the same — a large warm surface at low temperature, radiating upward, holding heat for hours after the boiler stops. The warm floor can make sitting or sleeping on floor bedding comfortable, depending on the temperature and bedding.

Understanding the controller

Boiler controllers differ by manufacturer and model. The same word can lead to different settings, so use the instructions for the controller in your room. The Navien manual directory is one manufacturer’s source; your host can help identify the correct model.

LabelWhat it generally refers to
실내난방This mode controls heating using the room-air temperature.
온돌난방 or 바닥This mode controls floor heating; the displayed temperature may refer to water in the heating pipes.
온수This setting controls hot water for taps and showers.
목욕This is a bathing or hot-water mode; check the model’s instructions before selecting it.
외출This is an away mode. It may reduce heating or provide frost protection, depending on the model.
예약This sets a timer or repeating heating schedule.
전원This switches the controller or system on or off.
정지This stops a function.

Ask the host for a comfortable room-temperature setting rather than copying a high number from the floor-water mode. Adjust gradually and allow time for the floor to respond; it can remain warm after the boiler stops.

If the shower stays cold, check the guest instructions and contact reception or your host. Do not assume that changing away mode or raising the floor-heating temperature will fix the hot water.

Avoid overheating

Keep the floor and any heated bedding at a comfortable setting. Prolonged contact with a hot surface can cause burns even when it does not initially feel painful. Follow the bedding or heating-mat manufacturer’s instructions, and do not add insulating layers unless they are permitted.

Test shower water carefully before stepping under it. A boiler’s internal water temperature is not necessarily the temperature delivered at the tap, and the mixing controls vary by installation.

Carbon monoxide, briefly

Gas boilers need correct installation, maintenance and ventilation. The law still treats per-room heating as the risk case: the Enforcement Rule of the Public Health Control Act (공중위생관리법 시행규칙) requires any accommodation business with individual heating units to fit a type-approved carbon monoxide alarm beside the unit or in the room. If you can see an individual boiler and cannot see an alarm, that is a question for reception, and a reason to avoid an unlicensed rental. Ventilate rather than sealing the room completely.

Sleeping on it

In a room with a bed, you can enjoy the warm floor without sleeping on it. Some traditional hanok stays provide a floor mattress (요) and a quilt (이불) straight onto the heated floor, with comfort depending on the bedding and temperature — the heat comes up through the bedding rather than at you from a radiator. What to expect from one is “Staying in a hanok (한옥), a traditional house”.

Two things that surprise first-timers either way. A Korean floor is shoes-off throughout, including in a rented flat, and you should follow the host’s instructions about indoor footwear. Keep heat-sensitive belongings, including electronics and food, away from a hot floor. Follow the device manufacturer’s storage and operating-temperature instructions.
