Finding food after midnight
Opening hours vary by business, even within the same chain. Check the branch’s current hours and last-order time before travelling. A shopping district that is busy in the evening may have very little food available after midnight.
| Option | What to check |
|---|---|
| Soup restaurants | Look for a 24시 sign, which means “24 hours,” and confirm that the kitchen is serving. |
| Barbecue, fried chicken and bars | Check the last-order time; the kitchen may close before the venue does. |
| Convenience stores | Check the individual branch’s hours, since some close overnight. |
| Food delivery | Enter your address to see which restaurants are accepting orders and which payment methods are available. |
| Market restaurants | Check restaurant hours separately from market trading or auction hours. |
Soup-and-rice restaurants can be a useful option for a seated meal late at night. Search for gukbap (국밥), which means soup with rice, or haejangguk (해장국), a category of soups traditionally eaten after drinking. Availability depends on the neighbourhood and the restaurant.
The 24-hour restaurant, and how to spot one
Look for 24 hours (24시) printed on the sign or the window — a numeral, legible even if you read nothing else: 24-hour hangover soup (「24시 해장국」), 24-hour pork-spine stew (「24시 감자탕」), 24-hour rice rolls (「24시 김밥」). Two more phrases are worth recognising on a door:
- 연중무휴 — open every day of the year, no regular closing day.
- 라스트오더 or L.O — last order, usually 30 to 60 minutes before the stated close. A place shutting at 02:00 often stops taking orders at 01:00, so check before travelling.
Chains have been pushing back into the small hours: KFC Korea runs 24 branches around the clock and 21 more until 02:00. Check the branch finder before travelling, because extended hours apply only to participating branches.
Check the business, not just the neighbourhood
A restaurant, internet café or bathhouse may stay open overnight, but that does not guarantee food service throughout the night. Check the kitchen’s hours and whether you need to pay an admission fee before relying on it for a meal.
Convenience stores — the assumption that catches people
Some convenience stores close overnight. Check the opening hours of the branch you plan to use rather than relying on the chain’s name or assuming that every store stays open for 24 hours.
Some branches offer overnight delivery. From 19 May 2026 GS25 and CU deliver 24 hours through Coupang Eats across Seoul, Gyeonggi and the six metropolitan cities. If the shop on your corner is shut, the app may still reach one that is not.
Ordering food to your room at 03:00
Delivery hours and coverage differ by app:
- Baemin (배달의민족) delivers 06:00–05:00 — but only in Seoul, Incheon and Uijeongbu, and between 03:00 and 05:00 only riders on foot or carrying commercial insurance can be assigned.
- Coupang Eats (쿠팡이츠) runs without a time limit across Seoul, Gyeonggi and the six metropolitan cities.
Check that the app accepts your payment method and delivers to your address. Ask your hotel where deliveries should be collected. The Han River delivery guidance is under “Ordering delivery to a Han River picnic”.
Places that are genuinely nocturnal
- Noryangjin Fisheries Market (노량진수산시장) is the real 24-hour destination. Its own hours page gives the auctions from 00:00 (general fish), 01:00 (shellfish), 01:30 (premium fresh fish) and 03:00 (live fish and frozen), with the premium sales floor open around the clock and no closing day. If you want to eat there, check that a restaurant is open and confirm its cooking charge before buying seafood. Auction hours do not establish restaurant kitchen hours.
- Hongdae (홍대, the nightlife and student district around Hongik University), Gangnam (강남역), Jongno 3-ga (종로3가) and Itaewon (이태원) have late-night dining options, but check the restaurant’s current kitchen hours before travelling.
- Pojangmacha (포장마차) are street-food tents or carts, often serving food and drinks in the evening. Check the stall’s hours and payment methods.
- Some bathhouses (찜질방) stay open around the clock and have food counters, which is why they double as a place to wait for the first train. A 24-hour bathhouse must bar under-19s during a window inside 22:00–05:00 unless a guardian is with them.
Getting back
Check your journey home before you settle in. The final train depends on your station, destination, day of the week and any transfer you need. If trains have stopped, check a night-bus route or arrange a taxi and allow for late-night surcharges. See “Getting home after the subway stops” for transport options.
