Two trips, one name
Almost every “DMZ tour” sold from Seoul is one of two things.
The Paju DMZ tour starts at Imjingak (임진각) and visits controlled border-area sites such as the Third Infiltration Tunnel (제3땅굴), Dora Observatory (도라전망대) and Unification Village (통일촌). Check the actual itinerary because included stops can change. Paju city runs it and it operates routinely.
The JSA (공동경비구역) at Panmunjom (판문점) is the Joint Security Area itself — the blue conference huts straddling the line, under United Nations Command. Foreign-visitor access has been suspended, so check the official notice before relying on a package that lists it.
Compare the actual itinerary and terms before paying. City-run tickets and commercial packages can have different prices, collection arrangements and cancellation policies.
The JSA: closed to foreign visitors
Civilian access to Panmunjom stopped on 18 July 2023, after a US soldier ran across the line during a tour, and the tour centre still carries that suspension notice. Visits came back in 2025 for Korean nationals only: the Ministry of Unification's application page limits applicants to South Korean citizens aged 8 and over and says group and foreign-national visits are not operating. UN Command rebuilt the visit in December 2025 so that even those visitors no longer enter the blue huts, and suspended it again for two weeks that autumn around a presidential visit. Operators say the same in English: not available until further notice.
If foreign-visitor access resumes, use the newly published nationality, age, identity-document and clothing requirements. Historical JSA restrictions do not establish the rules for a future visit or for an ordinary Paju tour.
The Paju tour
| Ticket | Walking | Monorail |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ₩9,200 | ₩12,200 |
| School student | ₩7,000 | ₩9,500 |
| 65 and over | ₩6,200 | ₩7,700 |
| Child 6 and under, with an adult | free | free |
Prices are Paju city's. The monorail saves you the climb back up out of the tunnel. A Seoul coach tour that does the queueing and the transfer for you costs about ₩55,000–₩95,000, on that operator's refund terms.
You buy at the Imjingak ticket office on the day — not by phone, not online — between 09:00 and 14:30, earlier if the day's buses fill. Then you board a shuttle at a fixed time and stay with it: Imjingak → Third Tunnel → Dora Observatory → Unification Village → Imjingak, about three hours. Dora Observatory cannot be visited on your own. Check closures on Mondays and public holidays, including Seollal, Korean Lunar New Year, and Chuseok, the autumn harvest holiday.
At the checkpoint
Without ID you do not get in, and for a visitor ID means the original, physical passport — a photo of the page on your phone is refused. It is checked twice, at the ticket window and at the bridge. Then:
- Do not photograph inside the Third Tunnel or fly a drone. Remove hats and sunglasses if instructed at the security check.
- The tunnel is steep and narrow; visitors with blood-pressure or breathing conditions may be kept out of it, and anyone with limited mobility should ask the operator whether the full route, including the monorail and tunnel, is suitable. A short film before the tunnel is compulsory.
- No dress code. The “no jeans, no sandals” rule belongs to the JSA. Wear closed shoes anyway — it is a lot of walking.
- Do not bring alcohol or fishing gear, or pick plants along the route.
Read your chosen operator’s cancellation terms
The following examples come from the linked commercial operator. They are not universal terms for every DMZ tour.
| Paju day tour | Historical JSA tour | |
|---|---|---|
| You cancel 2 days out | 100% back | — |
| You cancel 1 day out or later | nothing | — |
| You cancel 8+ business days out | — | 100% back |
| You cancel 5 business days or fewer | — | nothing |
| The army cancels it | “can be cancelled due to security reasons” | no refund |
| You arrive without a passport | no entry, no refund | no entry, no refund |
Military authorities can restrict access at short notice. Ask your operator what happens to the itinerary and payment if that occurs. Scheduling the visit before your final day may leave another opportunity, but a later departure can also be cancelled.
If Paju is full or shut
The DMZ Peace Trail (DMZ 평화의 길) runs 11 walking-and-shuttle routes across 10 border districts — Ganghwa, Gimpo, Goyang, Paju, Yeoncheon, Cheorwon, Hwacheon, Yanggu, Inje, Goseong — at ₩10,000 a person, first-come through the 두루누비 portal; the Paju, Cheorwon and Yeoncheon routes verify every member of your party. Cheorwon's Soisan Observatory and Goseong's Hwajinpo are quieter, and further.
