Which cards work
CatchTable Global accepts foreign-card payments without a Korean phone number. For Naver, a Korean search and online-services company, acceptance also depends on the merchant. Use a network displayed at checkout and keep a second payment method available. If a supported card fails, check the error message before choosing another method.
Common reasons a card payment fails
A decline can have several causes, including your bank’s limits or fraud checks. Three separate things can stop it, and the fix is different for each.
- The restaurant's payment processor was never set up for foreign cards. Online card payments in Korea run through a handful of processing companies — KG Inicis, NHN KCP and Toss Payments are the big three — and a merchant has to ask specifically for foreign-issued cards to be accepted. Many small ones never do. Ask the restaurant for another supported booking or payment method.
- The authentication step did not finish. Visa explains that online authentication can run silently or ask for an extra code, biometric check or bank-app approval. Follow any request and return to the booking site. An attempted payment in your banking app does not prove that the restaurant received a completed booking.
- The checkout wants a Korean phone in your name. Some Korean payment pages add an automated phone call to a mobile registered to the cardholder. If your number does not support this check, ask about another payment method. See “Why do Korean booking apps reject me?” for the distinction between ordinary SMS access and identity verification.
Check a pending payment before trying again
A pending amount without a booking confirmation is not enough to diagnose what happened. Check the app’s reservation list and email, then ask the platform to confirm the booking and payment status before repeating the purchase. Ask your issuer whether the amount is an authorization hold or a settled charge, and when it should be released. If authentication cannot open, try the supported browser and permit the payment window.
Getting the deposit back
The restaurant’s terms determine whether a deposit is deducted from the bill, returned separately, or retained after cancellation. Save those terms and any cancellation or refund confirmation. Posting times vary by platform and issuer; use the timeframe given for your transaction and contact support if it passes. A delay alone does not prove that a refund failed.
If it fails at the table
- Try your second card network.
- Ask whether you can pay the deposit in cash — 보증금을 현금으로 낼 수 있나요?
- If the page refuses before you even reach the screen that asks for a card number, check the error and account requirements; ask the restaurant or hotel for another booking route — “Asking your hotel to book a restaurant”.
