What the app is checking
Some Korean booking and payment services require identity verification (본인인증). The exact requirement depends on the service; an ordinary SMS code and a carrier identity check are different things. In a carrier identity check, the service verifies a Korean mobile number, and the carrier confirms that the line is registered, under the name you typed, to a Korean national ID number or a foreign resident's registration number. There are four official ways to pass it — a Korean mobile line, an i-PIN, a Korean-issued credit card or a Korean digital certificate — but that list does not establish eligibility for every foreign visitor.
Why a tourist SIM may not pass
A roaming SIM remains registered with your home carrier and does not establish the Korean identity record this check needs. A data-only travel SIM may not receive text messages at all. PASS, the carriers' shared verification app, passes a foreign national only when the line is registered with the carrier under that person's own name and resident details, and merely holding a residence card is not enough on its own. A residence card takes about a month to issue — longer than most trips last.
Buying a Korean SIM does not by itself enable carrier identity verification. Ask the provider whether your specific line supports 본인인증; receiving ordinary texts is a separate capability.
Try a booking service that supports visitors
These services offer visitor-friendly alternatives to the Korean carrier check.
- CatchTable Global. The international build of Korea's main restaurant-booking app signs you in with Google, Apple or email and takes a foreign card for the deposit — “How do I book a restaurant as a foreigner?” and “Signing up for CatchTable Global, the booking app”.
- Naver's passport verification. Since 4 June 2026, Naver supports smartphone passport verification without a Korean phone number. Follow the passport-verification instructions in the app. It supports participating Naver booking, ordering and payment services — “Booking on Naver with a passport, not a Korean ID”.
Tabling (a restaurant waitlist app that holds your place in the queue), the third booking app, may require a different route; check the restaurant’s on-site queue or ask staff for help — “The restaurant only takes the Tabling app”.
Check payment acceptance separately
Getting past sign-up does not mean your card will be taken. The company that processes a restaurant's card payments has to be set up for foreign-issued cards, and many small merchants never switch that on. A payment rejection can therefore have a different cause from an identity-check failure — “Paying a restaurant deposit with a foreign card”.
