Add the currencies you are carrying together
When entering Korea, you must declare more than US$10,000 in cash and other covered payment instruments combined. Korean won and foreign currencies count together; the limit is not a separate allowance for each currency. The Korea Customs Service explains the threshold and covered instruments.
Declare the money before leaving the arrival area
Tell Customs that you have currency to declare, give the amount and present it for inspection. Collect the foreign-exchange declaration certificate before leaving the arrival area. Customs says it cannot issue this certificate after you have left. Keep it with your travel documents.
Check the departure requirements separately
A nonresident taking out foreign currency brought in on their most recent entry may qualify for an exemption from a new declaration, with supporting evidence. Money earned, withdrawn or received in Korea can require different documentation. Ask Customs which procedure applies before departure.
Ask before crossing the declaration point
If you carry money for other people, explain the ownership and amount to Customs. Do not assume that permission to complete one family form determines how every currency rule applies. Failing to make a required declaration can lead to penalties.
