The light rail — cheap, frequent, and not a through train
The Busan–Gimhae Light Rail (부산김해경전철) is a driverless 21-station line running between Sasang (사상) in western Busan and Gaya University (가야대) in Gimhae city, and the airport sits on it. Understand the geography before you plan anything: the line runs across the western edge of Busan, not into it. Nothing on it goes to Seomyeon, Haeundae, Nampo-dong or Busan Station. Use it to reach a subway interchange for the rest of your journey.
Two interchanges matter, and the airport names both:
- Sasang (사상) — Subway Line 2. This is the one you want for Seomyeon, Gwangalli and Haeundae. Line 2 runs the length of the city's southern seafront and terminates at Jangsan (장산), which is Haeundae.
- Daejeo (대저) — Subway Line 3. Use this interchange for northern destinations or onward connections to Line 2 at Deokcheon (덕천) and Line 1 at Yeonsan (연산).
Fares come from the operator's own table and are flat by zone rather than by distance:
| transit card | single-journey ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (19+) | ₩1,600 | ₩1,700 |
| Zone 2 fare (long trips into Gimhae) | ₩1,800 | ₩1,900 |
| Youth (13–18) | ₩1,000 | ₩1,100 |
| Child (6–12) | free | ₩750 |
Under-6s travel free with an adult. The one that catches visitors from Seoul: over-65s pay the full adult fare here. There is no senior exemption on this line.
Check the integrated fare for your complete journey
Busan, Gimhae and Yangsan run a joint free-transfer scheme across their buses, subway and this light rail. Tap off, tap on again within 30 minutes, and eligible transfers receive the scheme’s fare adjustment. Check the permitted transfer count and any zone or distance charges for your full route. The ₩500 adult surcharge that used to be added on top was abolished on 19 September 2025, but that does not make every connecting journey a flat ₩1,600. The subway has fare zones, and additional charges can depend on the full route.
Tmoney works. The operator names the eligible cards — Hanaro Card (하나로카드), Mybi (마이비카드), eB Card (이비카드), Tmoney (티머니), Cashbee (캐시비) and post-paid credit-card transit — so a card bought in Seoul is fine here. Cashbee is the local brand and is what convenience stores in Busan stock most of, but both are accepted on many participating services in the region. One caution: the Donghae Line (동해선) is outside the scheme for journeys involving Gimhae or Yangsan services.
First and last trains, and the trap at the end of the night
From the airport station, per the operator's timetable:
| Direction | first | last |
|---|---|---|
| Toward Sasang (Busan) | 05:33 | 00:10 |
| Toward Gaya University (Gimhae) | 05:06 | 23:48 |
Airport to Sasang takes about six minutes.
The final light-rail service may not connect with the subway you need. At Sasang the last Line 2 train toward Jangsan — that is, toward Seomyeon and Haeundae — leaves at 23:45, with a short working as far as Jeonpo (전포) at 00:02. A light rail train leaving the airport at 00:10 reaches Sasang at about 00:16, long after both. In practice, a late light-rail departure may require a taxi for the onward journey. At Daejeo the last Line 3 train toward Suyeong (수영) is 23:40, so the same applies there.
Airport limousine buses offer direct journeys with luggage storage
Two limousine routes leave from stand 3 on level 1, outside both the international and the domestic terminal, run by Gyeongnam Express New Busan Tour (경남고속뉴부산관광) (051-583-7441). Your case goes in the hold and there is no change to make.
| Route | Fare | First | Last | Calls at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seomyeon / Bujeon (서면·부전) | ₩6,000 | 07:20 | 21:30 | Jurye, Dong-eui University, Seomyeon station / Lotte Department Store, Bujeon Market |
| Haeundae / Gijang (해운대·기장) | ₩9,500 | 07:10 | 21:40 | Namcheon-dong, Shinsegae Centum City, BEXCO, the yacht marina, Park Hyatt, Hanwha Resort, Dongbaekseom, Haeundae Beach entrance, Haeundae Oncheon junction, Jangsan station exit 5 |
Both are card fares — the airport lists them as card (카드) prices and there is no cash column. Some Haeundae departures skip the Gijang section, so check the timetable at the stand if you are going that far. Note the hours: the first bus is after seven in the morning and the last is before ten at night, a much narrower window than the light rail's.
City and intercity buses
From stand 2, the airport's route list gives:
| Route | To | Cash | Card | First | Last |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 307 | Haeundae, via Gupo, Dongnae, Centum, BEXCO, Jangsan, Songjeong | ₩1,700 | ₩1,550 | 05:15 | 23:20 |
| 3003 (express) | Jagalchi and Taejongdae | ₩2,200 | ₩2,100 | 05:00 | 21:30 |
| 109 | Myeongji and Gupo | ₩1,700 | ₩1,550 | 05:00 | 20:45 |
| Gangseo-11 / -13 | Sinpyeong, Gupo Market / Hadan, Deokcheon | ₩1,600 | ₩1,480 | 05:30–05:50 | 21:50–22:05 |
A large suitcase is not allowed on a Busan city bus. The carrier's terms of carriage, printed on the airport's own route sheets, permit only cabin-size cases — 20 kg and 50 × 40 × 20 cm per person. Route 307 can be useful with luggage that meets the operator’s limits. For a larger case, choose a service that can carry it.
Long-distance coaches leave from stand 4 at the domestic terminal and stands 4–5 at the international terminal, and you must buy a ticket before boarding — from the machines at the stand or in advance on 버스타고. Fares: Ulsan ₩8,800 (about every 30 minutes, 36 a day), Jinju ₩8,900, Changwon/Masan ₩9,100, Geoje ₩9,400, Dongdaegu ₩11,100 (29 a day), Gyeongju/Pohang ₩14,900, Gumi ₩17,000, Gwangju ₩25,800. Compare the complete journey and fare with travelling through Busan first.
Taxis, with the tariff and the airport's own fares
Gimhae publishes both the tariff and worked fares.
| Destination | Time | Standard (일반) | Deluxe (모범) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seomyeon (Lotte Hotel) | 45 min | ₩18,000 | ₩32,400 |
| Nampo-dong (Jagalchi Market) | 60 min | ₩20,000 | ₩36,000 |
| Haeundae (Paradise Hotel) | 70 min | ₩25,000 | ₩45,000 |
| Gwangalli (광안리) | 70 min | ₩25,000 | ₩45,000 |
| Taejongdae (태종대) | 80 min | ₩28,000 | ₩50,400 |
Busan's tariff is not Seoul's, and the distance and time charges differ. A standard taxi starts at ₩4,800 for the first 2 km — Seoul gives you only 1.6 km for the same money — then ₩100 per 132 m or ₩100 per 33 seconds. A deluxe or large taxi starts at ₩7,500 for 3 km, then ₩200 per 140 m.
The late-night surcharge on a standard taxi is 20% from 23:00 to midnight, 30% from midnight to 02:00, and 20% from 02:00 to 04:00. Deluxe taxis in Busan carry no late-night surcharge at all, which narrows the gap between the two grades after midnight considerably. Leaving the metropolitan area adds 30%, and where two surcharges apply they are added together and then reduced by 10%.
Around the airport itself
The international and domestic terminals are separate buildings on the same site, joined by a free circulation bus that runs 05:00–22:48 every 12 minutes, on a fixed clock-face schedule: the long-stay car park at :00, :12, :24, :36, :48; the international terminal at gate 1 at :05, :17, :29, :41, :53; the domestic terminal at gate 4 at :07, :19, :31, :43, :55.
If you want to reach your hotel without your bags, ZimCarry (짐캐리) has staffed counters in both terminals — the domestic terminal, level 2, inside gate 4, 06:00–20:50, and the international terminal, level 3 baggage store, 06:00–21:20.
Which one, for where you are going
- For a beach-area hotel with luggage, check the limousine route and its nearest stop before buying a ticket.
- For Haeundae with light luggage, take the light rail to Sasang and connect to Line 2 toward Jangsan. Check the full fare and the last connection.
- For Seomyeon, compare the limousine bus with the rail connection and a taxi.
- For Nampo-dong, Jagalchi or Taejongdae, check bus 3003 or plan the required subway and bus transfers from Sasang.
- For Ulsan, Gyeongju, Daegu or Changwon, compare a direct airport coach before travelling into Busan. Buy the required ticket before boarding.
- For a landing after 23:00, plan for a taxi if immigration or baggage collection leaves too little time for the last useful rail connection.
