Express train (직통열차) — fast and comfortable, but it only goes to Seoul Station
The Airport Railroad (공항철도, AREX) runs a non-stop express between the airport and Seoul Station and stops nowhere in between: 43 minutes from Terminal 1, 51 from Terminal 2, every seat assigned, luggage racks in the carriage, free wi-fi (look for AREX Free Wi-Fi), cabin crew, and free bottled water on request.
The fare is ₩13,000 for an adult and ₩9,500 for a child aged 6–12. That ₩13,000 is the advertised discounted price against a list fare of ₩18,500 to Terminal 1 and ₩19,100 to Terminal 2, and it applies to everyone — there is no separate foreign-visitor express ticket to hunt for. The ₩9,500 rate also covers Korean seniors over 65, registered disabled travellers and national merit holders on production of the relevant card. Discounts do not stack.
Buy at the express customer centre — Seoul Station B2, Terminal 1 B1 inside the transport centre, Terminal 2 B1 likewise — or reserve online in advance. Eligible express passengers can use the Seoul Station City Airport Terminal (도심공항터미널) for selected airlines and flights. Check the operating hours, check-in deadline and flight eligibility before planning to drop bags there.
The timetable is thin by rail standards: about 24 departures a day each way, roughly every 30–40 minutes. The full schedule is the same on weekdays and holidays.
| first | last | |
|---|---|---|
| From Terminal 2 | 05:16 | 22:40 |
| From Terminal 1 | 05:24 | 22:48 |
| Arrives Seoul Station | 06:07 | 23:31 |
| From Seoul Station | 06:00 | 23:00 |
All-stop train (일반열차) — cheap, frequent, and awkward with a suitcase
The all-stop train uses the same Airport Railroad but stops at intermediate stations and operates as a commuter service. It costs a fraction of the express and runs every few minutes, and the trade-off is that it is a commuter train, so there are no luggage racks. At busy times, you may need to stand and keep your luggage beside you. Avoid blocking doors or aisles.
Adult fares on a transit card, from AREX's fare table:
| To | from Terminal 1 | from Terminal 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Gimpo Airport (김포공항) | ₩4,350 | ₩4,950 |
| Digital Media City (디지털미디어시티) | ₩4,550 | ₩5,150 |
| Hongik University (홍대입구) | ₩4,650 | ₩5,250 |
| Gongdeok (공덕) | ₩4,650 | ₩5,250 |
| Seoul Station (서울역) | ₩4,750 | ₩5,350 |
A single-journey card costs ₩100 more and carries a ₩500 deposit you get back from a refund machine at your destination. Children pay ₩550 base plus half the adult distance rate; teenagers 13–18 pay ₩900 base plus 80%. Free or discounted travel has age, registration and proof requirements. Confirm eligibility for your passenger category; a short-term visitor should not assume that a foreign senior or disability document grants free travel.
Journey times from Terminal 2, cumulative, as the airport publishes them: Terminal 1 6 min · Unseo 14 · Cheongna 27 · Gyeyang (계양, Incheon Line 1) 37 · Gimpo Airport (Lines 5 and 9, Gimpo Goldline, Seohae Line) 44 · Magongnaru (마곡나루, Line 9) 47 · Digital Media City (Line 6, Gyeongui-Jungang) 54 · Hongik University (홍대입구, Line 2) 58 · Gongdeok (공덕, Lines 5 and 6) 62 · Seoul Station (Lines 1 and 4, and the KTX high-speed network) 66. Knock six minutes off all of those if you start at Terminal 1.
Those interchanges are the point. For a Line 2 destination, compare a transfer at Hongik University with the other available routes. The best connection depends on the actual station. If it is on Line 9, change at Magongnaru or Gimpo Airport.
Airport buses can reduce the walk or transfer to your hotel
An airport bus can be convenient when its route stops near your accommodation. Your case goes in the hold, you get a wide reclining seat, and you step off a short walk from your hotel rather than at a station with a subway change still to come.
Incheon Airport runs 33 daytime Seoul routes plus four night routes. The ones a visitor is most likely to want:
| Route | Ends at | Fare | Last from Terminal 1 | Last from Terminal 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6015 | Myeongdong (명동역), via Gongdeok, Chungjeongno, Namdaemun, Euljiro | ₩17,000 | 23:19 | 22:59 |
| 6001 | Dongdaemun (동대문) | ₩17,000 | 23:09 | 22:49 |
| 6002 | Cheongnyangni (청량리역) | ₩17,000 | 23:29 | 23:09 |
| 6005 | Seoul City Hall (서울시청) | ₩17,000 | 22:54 | 22:34 |
| 6006 | Jamsil Saenae (잠실새내역) | ₩17,000 | 23:10 | 22:50 |
| 6020 | Yeoksam (역삼역) | ₩17,000 | 23:02 | 22:42 |
| 6103 | Samseong (삼성역) — direct, via the city airport terminal | ₩18,000 | 23:30 | 23:10 |
| 6701 | City Hall / Gwanghwamun (시청·광화문) | ₩18,000 | 22:25 | 22:05 |
| 6703 | Gangnam / COEX (강남·코엑스) | ₩18,000 | 22:55 | 22:35 |
You cannot pay the driver. Buy a ticket first — at the booths on Terminal 1 level 1, inside and outside the hall, or at the manned booth and vending machines in the Terminal 2 transport centre, B1. Seoul-bound buses leave from outside exits 3–7 at Terminal 1 and from central stands 11–35 on B1 at Terminal 2. Allow one to two hours for immigration and baggage before you book anything with a fixed departure time.
The 6015 to Myeongdong (central Seoul's main shopping street, and its cosmetics district) shows why the bus wins for central Seoul: it calls at Mapo, Gongdeok, Chungjeongno, the Korea Economic Daily building, Namdaemun Market, the Lotte Hotel, Euljiro, Chungmuro and Myeongdong — nine stops, all of them hotel districts, none of them a subway change.
Compare a taxi for your group and destination
The airport's taxi page shows the live queue at both terminals as well as the tariff. Standard (일반) taxis start at ₩4,800; the meter then runs at ₩100 per 131 m, or ₩100 per 30 seconds when the traffic is slow. Deluxe (모범택시) and nine-seat large (대형택시) taxis start at ₩7,000 and charge ₩200 per 151 m.
Seoul is about 50 km from the airport, so a daytime standard-taxi meter to central Seoul lands at about ₩50,000, plus the toll. The direct route uses Yeongjong Bridge (영종대교), whose airport toll plaza charges ₩3,200. The alternative Incheon Bridge (인천대교) charges ₩2,000 for a car, after a 63% cut in December 2025. After 23:00 the meter runs 40% higher, and a night ride is closer to ₩70,000.
Incheon Airport is a joint operating zone shared by Seoul, Incheon and four Gyeonggi cities (Bucheon, Gwangmyeong, Gimpo, Goyang), so no out-of-area surcharge applies to any of them. Go beyond and it does: 20% on Seoul and Gyeonggi cabs, 30% on Incheon ones.
Taxi stands: at Terminal 1, standard cabs at 5C, 6C, 6D, deluxe and large at 7C and 8C; at Terminal 2, standard at 7C, deluxe and large at 7D.
International Taxi (인터내셔널 택시), 1644-2255, is a foreigner-only service with English-, Japanese- and Chinese-speaking drivers and — the useful part — a flat zone fare rather than a meter, so traffic is not your problem. Airport-to-Seoul zones run ₩70,000 (A), ₩75,000 (B), ₩85,000 (C), ₩90,000 (D), ₩95,000 (E) for a standard car, and ₩100,000 to ₩140,000 for a deluxe or large one. Book at least 24 hours ahead, or walk up to the information booth at either terminal. You can pay by an accepted card or in cash. Its stand is 4C at Terminal 1, 3C at Terminal 2.
Ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride. The airport itself warns that call vans posing as taxis work the arrivals hall and overcharge, and tells arriving passengers to walk to a marked stand instead.
Which one, for where you are staying
- For accommodation near Seoul Station or a convenient Line 1 or 4 connection, compare the express with the cheaper all-stop train.
- For Hongdae, Yeonnam or a convenient Line 2 connection, consider the all-stop train to Hongik University. Hongdae is the university district around Hongik University, known for restaurants and nightlife.
- For Myeongdong, Euljiro, Gwanghwamun or Insadong, check whether bus 6015 or 6701 stops near your accommodation.
- For Gangnam, Sinsa, Samseong or Jamsil, compare an airport bus, a taxi and the rail connection via Gimpo Airport to Line 9.
- For three or four people with large bags, compare the taxi quote with the combined bus fares and confirm luggage capacity.
- If you land after 23:00, allow for immigration and baggage collection when checking the last departure. Identify a night bus, taxi or overnight option before flying.
