Set up a way to pay for transport
A physical Tmoney card is a straightforward option for supported buses and subways. Participating convenience stores and transport sales points sell the card; the purchase price does not include your travel balance. Add money before boarding and keep enough cash for places where top-ups require it. Do not assume that a direct tap from your overseas bank card will work at a fare gate.
WOWPASS is a prepaid shopping card with a separate Tmoney transit balance. Climate Card is a flat-fee travel pass covering specified services in and around Seoul. Its short tourist passes can suit several days of frequent travel, but check that your planned routes are included. A pass valid in Seoul does not necessarily cover another city or a premium rail service.
Compare the subway, bus and taxi for each journey
Seoul’s subway is useful for avoiding road traffic. A bus may provide a more direct route when the subway requires a long interchange. Seoul uses colours to distinguish bus types: blue routes cross the city, green routes connect local areas, yellow routes circulate within an area, and red routes connect Seoul with surrounding cities. Check the route number, direction and stop name rather than choosing a bus by colour alone.
For an adult using a transit card, the ordinary Seoul subway base fare is ₩1,550 and a blue or green city bus starts at ₩1,500. Distance charges and special-service surcharges may apply. Eligible transfers normally require boarding the next service within 30 minutes of tapping off, extended to 60 minutes between 21:00 and 07:00. A transfer discount avoids paying each service’s full base fare separately; it does not make every additional journey free.
Taxis can help with luggage or a journey that public transport does not serve conveniently. Regular Seoul taxis have a ₩4,800 daytime base fare. Night travel, travel outside the service area and premium vehicle types can cost more. Check the vehicle type and fare conditions before confirming an app booking.
Choose between a train and a coach
Compare the whole route, not just the time spent on board. KTX trains connect many major cities, while coaches serve additional destinations and may stop closer to where you want to stay. Standard coaches usually have four seats across; deluxe and premium coaches offer more space at a higher price.
Korail is the national railway operator. Use Korail’s foreign-language booking service for a visitor-friendly train search and supported overseas-card payment. Confirm your departure station, arrival station and boarding time. A KORAIL PASS is a visitor rail pass; compare its current price and eligible journeys with separate tickets before buying it.
For coaches, use the booking service appropriate to the route and keep the payment card and reservation details if counter collection is required. Traffic can lengthen coach journeys, especially on holiday weekends.
Plan your airport arrival
From Incheon Airport, compare the AREX express, AREX all-stop train, an airport coach and a taxi. The express runs to Seoul Station without intermediate stops; the all-stop train serves additional stations. Coaches may stop closer to your hotel and have luggage holds. Taxi fares depend on the full journey and can include tolls and applicable surcharges.
Check departures from your actual terminal after allowing for immigration and baggage collection. Late-night airport buses operate on selected routes, so a taxi is not automatically the only option after regular coaches finish. Confirm the timetable for your arrival date.
Decide whether you need a car
Public transport is often easier for a stay focused on central Seoul. Driving may be useful for a rural itinerary or for reaching places around Jeju that are awkward by bus. Jeju also has buses, taxis and tours, so a hire car is a choice rather than a condition of visiting.
Arrange an official International Driving Permit where required and carry it with your national licence and passport. Confirm the vehicle category, document validity, age and insurance conditions with your rental company. Follow posted traffic rules and ask how the company handles tolls and penalties.
Check the final connection
Before leaving, save the destination’s name and address, choose a suitable station exit and check the walk from there. For late travel, verify every required connection rather than relying on a general statement about when the subway closes. If you need step-free access, check the lift entrance and transfer route as well as the train service.
