Confirm eligibility at the shop
The shopping refund is for qualifying non-resident visitors buying eligible goods at designated shops. Residence, work and length-of-stay conditions apply, so a short visit alone does not establish eligibility. Show your passport and ask the shop to confirm the procedure before paying.
A receipt must total at least ₩15,000 including tax. The goods must leave Korea within three months of purchase, unused and in the required condition. Meals, transport and other services are outside the shopping scheme. Designated hotel stays use a separate refund scheme. Do not rely on older cosmetic-treatment refund advertisements.
Understand the amount returned
Value-added tax, or VAT, is included in taxable retail prices. At a 10% VAT rate, a ₩110,000 price contains ₩10,000 of tax. The refund operator then deducts its fee, so you receive less than the tax included in the price.
Refund tables use purchase bands. For example, Global Tax Free lists ₩1,000 back on a ₩15,000 purchase and ₩7,000 on a ₩100,000 purchase. Use the table for the operator named on your receipt. Combining or separating different items may increase or reduce the refund; do not buy unwanted items just to reach a band.
Choose a refund procedure
| Procedure | Main conditions | When you receive the benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate refund | The receipt is under ₩1,000,000 and eligible purchases total no more than ₩5,000,000 per visit. | The shop deducts the refund when you pay. |
| Downtown advance | The operator’s receipt limit, card guarantee and validation deadline apply. | You receive an advance before export validation. |
| Airport claim | You retain the paperwork and complete the required export checks. | You receive the refund through the operator’s available payment route. |
The ₩6,000,000 receipt limit concerns the electronic advance-refund procedure. It does not limit refunds at the airport.
An immediate refund is convenient when available, but you must still export the goods and retain the receipt. Ask the shop whether it supports this procedure.
For a downtown advance, read your operator’s conditions. Global Tax Free describes a guarantee of 110% of the refund on a supported credit card and customs validation within 25 days of receiving the advance. Other operators’ terms may differ. Check the desk’s current address, hours and accepted refund documents before travelling there.
Complete the airport steps
Keep your passport, refund slips and goods accessible before handing over checked baggage. At Incheon, scan the documents at the required departures-floor kiosk and visit Customs if directed. Follow the airline’s instructions if the goods must go in checked baggage. Then use the counter, machine or electronic payment route specified by your refund operator.
Incheon Airport’s guide describes the sequence and facilities. Check your terminal and the current counter hours. A machine being available does not guarantee that every refund can be completed without staff, so allow extra time for a failed scan or inspection.
If you already received a downtown advance, export validation still matters. Do not confuse passing immigration with completing the customs check. Contact the operator immediately if validation fails or a deadline is approaching.
Keep receipts accurate
Check the passport details and purchase information on the refund documents before leaving the shop. Do not ask a retailer to divide the price of one item across slips to avoid a limit. For separate items, ask how the available refund procedure and purchase bands apply.
