Complete export validation before handing over the goods
Follow the sequence in Incheon Airport’s instructions:
- Arrive on the 3rd floor — departures, at both Incheon terminals.
- Go to a self-service kiosk first, before bag drop. Scan your passport,
then each refund slip's barcode. Most people are cleared electronically here and never speak to anyone.
- If the machine sends you to customs, go with the goods. Bring your passport, unopened goods and refund documents. The officer confirms the export.
- Only now check your baggage.
- Clear security and immigration.
- Collect the money airside, at the counter or machine near your gate.
Complete the required validation before handing over your baggage. If an officer wants to see a ₩1,400,000 handbag and it is already on a belt heading for the aircraft, Customs may be unable to validate the export. Ask the airline and Customs for assistance immediately. If the goods must go in checked baggage, tell the airline before handing over the bag. Complete the required export validation and follow the airline’s instructions for dropping it off.
Two mechanics explain why the kiosk usually just works. Where the shop has already sent an electronic sales confirmation to customs, customs may waive seeing the paper slip at all. And inspection is a selection, not a rule: customs picks some transactions to check against the slip, on criteria it does not publish — high-value single items are the ones travellers report being asked about.
If you already took the money at a downtown desk, this scan is what stops the deposit on your card being taken — “Downtown tax refund: the customs scan you must not miss”.

Confirm arrangements at other airports
Gimpo splits the two steps across floors, which catches people expecting the Incheon layout.
| Airport | Customs | Refund counter | Staffed hours | Machines |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gimpo (김포) | 2F, Gate 1 | 3F, Gate 36 | 06:30–20:00 | 24h |

Locations from Global Tax Free's counter list. For another departure airport or port, confirm the export-validation and payment arrangements with Customs and the operator on your refund slip. Some locations use a document-drop or later-transfer process. An old counter list does not establish that an airport currently has international departures or an operating refund desk.
How long to allow
The kiosk is quick when it works — a passport scan and a barcode per slip. What blows the estimate is being sent to customs, especially in the morning and evening peaks when Terminal 1's check-in floor is at its worst; allow 20–30 minutes for that. So:
- Add 30–40 minutes to whatever check-in time you would otherwise plan,
as a minimum.
- Arrive about three hours before a normal departure, four in peak season.
- The staffed desks close before the airport does: a 06:00 departure from
Gimpo has no staffed desk at 05:00 — only a machine, only in won.
What to bring, and what fails
Bring your passport — the booklet, which is what the kiosk scans; your boarding pass or ticket details; every refund slip; and the goods, in your hand baggage, unopened — customs requires them carried out unused and as sold.
Check for problems before departure. Keep the goods accessible until validation and check that each slip has the correct personal and purchase details. Used or consumed goods may not qualify. Confirm the airport’s refund method and export the goods within the required three months.
Getting paid
Staffed counters pay cash — won, and depending on the terminal US dollars, yen or yuan. Machines pay won only, or push the refund to Alipay or WeChat Pay. There is also a card route: the refund goes back to whichever card you paid with, typically within a few weeks. You may be able to spend a small cash refund at airside shops or cafés before boarding. A larger cash payment may leave you with won to exchange after the trip. Consider an available card-refund option if you would otherwise take home a large amount of won.
