Identify what failed
If tapping produces no response, ask whether the terminal supports your contactless card. Try inserting the physical card into the chip reader. If the terminal displays a decline, the cause may be your bank's authorisation, the merchant's payment system or an unsupported card network.
Do not assume that one error message identifies the cause. Ask the merchant for the transaction result and check your bank app when possible.
Check for a pending payment before retrying
A payment can appear to fail while an authorisation hold remains on your account. Check the result before repeatedly attempting the same purchase. Keep any receipt or error message if you need to ask the merchant or bank about it.
If you need to pay immediately, ask whether another card, cash or a staffed checkout is available. Confirm that you are not paying twice for the same completed sale.
Check your bank settings and available balance
Check your available funds or credit after hotel deposits and other holds. Review overseas-use restrictions and any security notification from the bank. Some cards require an additional verification step for a new or unusual transaction.
Use your bank's official app or support number. Do not give a merchant your banking password or a verification code intended to approve a different transaction.
Stop if you are unsure of the PIN
Use the correct PIN supplied or set through your issuer. Do not shorten a longer PIN or guess repeatedly; failed attempts can block a card. Switch payment methods and contact the bank if you are unsure.
A small transaction that did not ask for a PIN does not establish the requirements for every later payment.
Check online and kiosk payment options
An online checkout may have a separate overseas-card option or redirect you to your bank for authentication. Complete the supported process and check for a confirmed order before paying again.
Kiosks, apps and staffed counters can support different payment methods. If a kiosk rejects your card, ask whether a staffed counter can process it. A Korean prepaid card is another option only if the business actually accepts that product.
Check the physical card
If the reader reports a chip error, gently wipe the chip and try inserting it fully. Leave it in place until the terminal asks you to remove it. If it still cannot be read, use another payment method and ask your issuer whether the card needs replacing.
Keep another payment method available
Carry a physical card and cash even if you normally pay by phone. A second card can help if your main issuer declines a payment. If your bank confirms that withdrawals are available, use a compatible Global ATM and review its charges before confirming.
