Where to top up instead
The supported routes below add money to the same Tmoney balance displayed in Apple Wallet.
| Route | Works for a visitor? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Tmoney app, Foreigner mode, with a foreign Mastercard, Amex or UnionPay | Yes, in the current app | The current app also lists JCB. Reported charges are around 4.5%; check the actual total before confirming. Visa is not accepted — “Can I top up Tmoney in the Mobile Tmoney app with a foreign card?” |
| A station machine, holding the phone to it | Yes | Cash at a supported machine. Foreign-card support for other ticket types does not establish Tmoney top-up support — “Can I top up a Tmoney card at a subway station?” |
| A convenience-store till, holding the phone to the reader | Yes | Cash |
| Apple Wallet's own top-up button | Only with a Hyundai Card | Wallet’s direct reload route requires an eligible Korean card |
| Bank transfer inside the app | No | This route requires a Korean bank account. |
Why the button is not for you
Apple Wallet does offer to top up a Tmoney card, and Koreans use it every day. Two restrictions sit behind it, neither visible on the screen. First, the money has to come from a card issued in Korea. Second, Korea's Apple Pay has only ever accepted Hyundai Card since it launched in March 2023 — Shinhan and KB Kookmin had still not joined as of January 2026 — so even a Korean bank card usually cannot fund it. The button may be present even when your overseas card is not eligible. Use the supported Mobile Tmoney route or a cash-reload location instead. Tmoney advertises a separate fee-offset mileage benefit for eligible prepaid users. Do not assume it cancels a visitor’s foreign-card conversion charge.
Check the eligibility of the payment card, not just whether the top-up button is visible. Mobile Tmoney’s Foreigner mode and supported cash-reload locations provide alternatives for visitors.
