What to carry instead of your Visa
Arrange a supported transit card or ticket before reaching the gate.
Emart24, and at the airport. Hand the clerk cash to load it, then tap it at the gates and readers on services that accept it. For buying and using the card, “What is a Tmoney transit card?” has the details.
- Check which ticket the machine sells. Seoul’s new machines accept foreign cards for Climate Cards and single-journey tickets. Carry cash for an ordinary Tmoney top-up. “Can I top up a Tmoney card at a subway station?” explains the distinction.
- iPhone or Apple Watch: add Tmoney to Apple Wallet and hold the phone to
the gate — it has worked since 21 July 2025, with no unlocking. That is a Tmoney balance on your phone, not your bank card, and loading it with a foreign card has its own rules: “Can I add a Tmoney transit card to my iPhone?”.
What works at the gate
| What you hold to the reader | Opens the gate? |
|---|---|
| A foreign Visa, Mastercard or Amex | No |
| A Tmoney card with enough balance | Yes |
| Tmoney in Apple Wallet | Yes, since 21 July 2025 |
| Apple Pay with your bank card | No — a shop accepting Apple Pay says nothing about gates |
| A foreign bank card, after 2027, Lines 1–8 | Planned, not yet live |
| A foreign bank card elsewhere, 2028–2030 | Planned, further out |
Why the gate ignores your card
Korean fare gates use supported transit cards or tickets. These include Tmoney, EZL (formerly Cashbee) and, on eligible routes, Seoul's Climate Card unlimited-travel pass. An overseas Visa, Mastercard or Amex does not work as a substitute for a supported transit card. A contactless symbol or transit acceptance in another country does not establish compatibility with Korean fare gates. Seoul's city government says so itself on its page about letting bank cards tap in future, and describes a phased rollout beginning in 2027.
When your bank card will tap directly
Seoul's plan runs in three steps:
| Step | When | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2025–2026 | Bus readers get new payment modules; a payment server is built |
| 2 | 2027 | Subway gates on Lines 1–8 get readers that accept bank cards |
| 3 | 2028–2030 | Town buses, private railways and the wider metropolitan area follow |
The announced timetable is a plan, not a guarantee that every gate will accept foreign cards in 2027. Use a transit card until the operator explicitly confirms direct bank-card payment on your route.
