How does paying for things in Korea work?

Arrange your transport payment

A supported transit card or ticket is the practical choice for bus and subway journeys. Do not assume that tapping an overseas bank card at a fare gate will work. Seoul’s planned bank-card payment rollout is a separate project from the transit-card services available to visitors.

An ordinary physical Tmoney card costs around ₩3,000–5,000 before you add money. Participating convenience stores and transport sales points sell them. You can buy an unregistered card without an app, account or Korean phone number. Add cash at a supported counter or reload machine.

Phone-based Tmoney, WOWPASS and short-term Climate Card passes are alternatives with different requirements. WOWPASS is a prepaid shopping card with a separate transit balance. Climate Card is an unlimited-travel pass for eligible routes during a chosen period. Compare the setup, funding and coverage before choosing.

Keep cash for smaller purchases

For a typical city day, ₩20,000–50,000 is a useful starting amount alongside your card. Adjust it for your plans, especially markets, street-food purchases or cash transit top-ups. Smaller banknotes are easier to use when a seller has limited change.

Some sellers offer a domestic bank transfer instead of a card payment. If you do not have a suitable Korean account, ask about another method or use cash. A failed overseas-card payment is not itself proof of unlawful refusal.

Compare exchange and withdrawal costs

Airport counters are convenient for immediate arrival costs. City exchange shops and bank branches may quote different rates. Compare the final amount of won you will receive, including fees, and use a registered provider.

For an ATM withdrawal, look for a Global ATM displaying your card’s network. Review its charge before confirming, and remember that your own bank may charge separately. WOWPASS kiosks also offer currency exchange and withdrawals; check the particular kiosk’s rate, services and access hours.

Read the currency choice

A terminal may offer to convert the payment into your home currency. This is dynamic currency conversion. Choosing won leaves conversion to your card network and bank; accepting the terminal’s offer uses its displayed conversion rate and markup. Compare the total costs and check that your receipt shows the currency you selected.

Check the total price and refund conditions

Restaurant menu prices include applicable tax and service charges. Tipping is not customary. Read hotel booking totals carefully because quoted rates may present charges separately.

Eligible visitors can claim part of the tax on qualifying goods bought at participating shops and taken out of Korea in the required condition. The shopping scheme has a ₩15,000 minimum purchase and a three-month export deadline. The refund operator deducts a fee, so the refund is not a flat 10% of the price. Ask the shop which procedure applies and retain the documents.
